International student funding

British Chevening Scholarships

The British Chevening Scholarships, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Department for International Development (DfID), are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the UK.

The scholarships are offered in more than 150 countries for study in any subject field for those pursuing full-time postgraduate or second degree courses or full-time research at a UK higher education institution. The scholarships cover all or part of the cost of the period of study. Preference is given to postgraduates or those already established in a career and in countries receiving bilateral aid, the development relevance of the course is important.

Candidates for the scholarships are selected by British Embassies and High Commissions overseas in consultation with the local British Council representative. Application must be made through the British Diplomatic Mission in the students' country of origin.

More information can be found at your local British Council office or on the British Council website

Marshall Scholarships

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high academic ability to study for a degree in the UK. For further details go to the Marshall Scholarships website.

Voluntary Organisations

Voluntary organisations, such as religious bodies and charities, sometimes award scholarships, though they can be limited in size and scope. Local newspapers and local British Council offices may also hold details of these schemes as they become available

Websites to look at

A new development from the British Council means that it is now possible to search for a scholarship online. You can now find any scholarships that are appropriate to your country of origin, level of study, subject, and institutions where you are interested in studying. To try the search o the Education UK website.

UKCISA is The Council for International Education. They provide advice and information about studying in the UK as an international student. You can find more information by checking out UKCISA website. The information is intended as a guide to possible sources of funding for international students who want to study in the UK.
