Sarah Crabbe
Head of Programme MALIC
Sarah initially worked as a computer operator for
a money mechanism system developer providing support for the 3D
solid modeller system. Then moved to be system manager for a
software house before stepping into the HR manager role. More
recently has studied a teaching degree and currently lecturing in
IT and supporting the development of innovative teaching pedagogy
in a university wide context as an E-Pedagogy Teaching Fellow.
Chris Mortimer
Head of Programme, MBA and MA suite
Chris’s industrial experience has been gained
over 14 years working in manufacturing across the UK, with
particular involvement in cultural change management and the
implementation of continuous improvement. She has four years
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience, together with
lecturing in partner universities in Pakistan. Her specialist
teaching areas are leadership and management development and
practice, operations management, project management, strategy and
supporting entrepreneurial businesses. At present Chris is
completing her PhD dealing with the social construction of business
leadership. Current research interests include the interface
between business leadership and society. She is also undertaking
consultancy work within the Museum sector, examining current and
future leadership styles, needs and practice.
Dr George Boak
Senior Lecturer – Leading Innovation
& Change
George has over 20 years of experience of
working closely with practising managers and professionals on
personal and organisational development. Over this time he has
worked with a wide range of private sector companies as well as
with small businesses, local authorities, the NHS and the civil
service. His main interests are in leadership and leading change,
and in helping people to develop skills in these areas. His
publications include: Leading Innovation and Change in the Health
Service, 2002 editor with Helen Jones; Mental Models for Managers,

Dr Steve Watson
Principal Lecturer, Business
Management (Marketing & Tourism)
Steven is an experienced manager and
academic with 30 years in higher education at the Universities of
York, Edinburgh, Hull and latterly York St John. Steve took a ten
year 'sabbatical' in local government where he rose to Assistant
Director level before deciding to return to academia. In his
academic role he has conducted operational research for government
departments, local authorities and other organisations. He has
published books and articles on heritage tourism in the UK, Spain
and Greece and has provided consultancy services to universities in
the UK, Spain, Greece, Malaysia and Singapore. Apart from teaching
and conducting research he is also a director of Visit York and
takes pride in the work he does to promote York as an international
tourist destination.
Martin Pliener
Senior Lecturer, Business Management
(Finance)
Martin is a qualified accountant (CIPFA) who has
worked in Higher Education for over 20 years teaching mainly
accounting and finance on a range of post graduate and
undergraduate courses. He worked with many practising
managers, both within formal programmes of studies and also on
customised courses delivered to managers working within the NHS,
local government, Further Education, as well as private sector
firms of various sizes. Martin has also worked in local
government and for a small family firm. He is particularly
interested in public sector accounting and his research interests
include personality types and the use of accounting information,
and the use of Audit Committees within Further Education.
Dr Andreas Walmsley
Senior Lecturer, Business
Management
Andreas has significant experience of teaching at
both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in higher education,
including PhD supervision. He has advised a range of UK and
international institutions on the design of their programmes and is
currently on the executive committee for the Association for
Tourism in Higher Education. Andreas is actively engaged in
research and consultancy; clients include the Department for the
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the International Consumers
Research & Testing association, the International Finance
Corporation, University Forum for Human Resource Development and
the Higher Education Academy. He has published numerous journal
articles and book chapters as well as being invited to speak at
national and international events. He is an Associate of the
International Centre for Responsible Tourism and
WorkingVisionsGlobal, a HR consultancy.
