YSJ Design Student becomes MEDS National Contact for England
MEDS- Meeting of Design Students is held every year
within a different European country, comprising of a 2
week workshop run for students by students. It is
a relatively new non-profit organisation, starting in
2010 it is now a unique way to be immersed in a large and
still growing group of young, exciting designers from across the
whole of Europe!
Alastair Brooks (Product Design Student) was involved in
MEDSistanbul 2011 as part of the England Team, comprising of 5
members picked from a variety of disciplines, ranging from first
year design students to finishing MA Degrees. He is now the
official ‘National Contact for England’ dealing with the
responsibility of Art and Design Entries.
Each year the host city gives a varied way to interact with not
only each other, but the local community and culture. The Istanbul
workshops were held an hour out of the city, where all 200
Participants camped just 200 meters away from the beach- which
became their home, design centre, workshop and social area for two
weeks! Workshops not only allow you to interact with
other nationalities, but also learn skills from an array of
disciplines including architecture. Once the day is over there are
always social events, such as parties, National Evening, visiting
lecturers, film nights and trips into cities!

MEDSlisbon2013
MEDSlisbon2013 looks set to be even bigger and better- and as
National Contact for England I am now trying to bring a varied and
well skilled England Team to Lisbon, ranging from Fine Art students
to Architects and Photographers! I hope you will be one of
them!"
This year we will be accepting entries from Wales,
Northern Ireland and Malta- This is due to these countries
not yet having their own National Team, and will positively add a
range of backgrounds to an already broad spectrum of
nationalities.
We will also be accepting entries from Art based subjects,
including Photography and Fine Art, to broaden the
diversity of disciplines and workshop interactions within the 2
week projects. This not only adds to the MEDS aims of
collaboration, integration and skill sharing, but greatly benefits
all participants by doing so.
To apply, students must first submit a short
statement as to why they would like to Participate in MEDS
E:medsengland.design@gmail.com .
They will then be informed of how to enter a competitive selection
process based upon various skills, and given the option to also
apply to be a Tutor.
The 2013 Workshop will be in Lisbon, Portugal- known as
MEDSlisbon2013, REACTION. REACTION is a two-week workshop
to be held in August 2013 aiming at reflective action over
small-scale city issues in the heart of Lisbon. The process
consists of finding areas of the Graça district which the community
would like to see recovered, identifying the issues that arise in
these areas, and over the course of the workshop to create real
solutions that are carried out during the event.
