RCOMH Education Link Kerry Sorby

Kerry Sorby“I feel privileged to be a part of this exciting development. I look forward to being part of a project that will influence the curriculum and enhance the learning experience for students on the occupational therapy programmes.”

Some background about me…

I studied occupational therapy here at York St John University. I began my professional career in Nottingham on a physical rotational post before moving back to work in the Yorkshire region. I have predominately worked with people with orthopaedic and/or rheumatological clinical conditions, particularly those who have an injury/condition impacting on the occupational performance of their hand/arm. I completed a MSc in Allied Health (Hand Therapy) from the University of Derby. I have developed a strong interest in self-management for people with long term conditions and this has influenced by interest in research: I am currently involved in a research project about self-management of osteoarthritis of the thumb (SMOAT study) and have also supervised undergraduate students on a number of projects on this topic area evaluating service user’s perspectives of their self-management education groups.

The professional activities I am currently involved in…

I am currently on the educational subcommittee for the British Association of Hand Therapists.

In my work…

I am a senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at York St John University. This involves me being a part of the physical health teaching team across both in-service and full-time occupational therapy programmes. I am committed to developing an exceptional learning experience for students at the university. This is the reason I was so eager to be involved in RCOMH: I have been impressed by how the research undertaken by RCOMH has already begun to influence the curriculum and hence enhance the learning opportunities for the students. I look forward to developing the links between education and research even further.
