PhD profile Assoc Prof Louise Farnworth
Associate Professor Louise Farnworth is the inaugural Head of
the Department of Occupational Therapy at Monash University in
Melbourne Australia. Her practice background was in forensic mental
health and she still continues to have a role in forensic
occupational therapy at the Victorian Forensic Mental Health
Services, Thomas Embling Hospital in Melbourne. She completed her
master degree at the University of Melbourne in Criminology on the
integration difficulties of women prison officers into a male
prison and her PhD at the University of Southern California in
Occupational Science completing a PhD on The Time Use and
Subjective Experience of Occupations of Young Male and Female Legal
Offenders. These studies involved both qualitative and quantitative
research methodologies, including Experience Sampling Method.
Her research expertise is in human use of time and environments
that contribute to health and well-being, particularly for
institutionalized groups. She has completed several time use
studies predominantly from the perspectives of mental health
consumers and has supervised over 20 honours, Masters and PhD
students to completion. While she is interested in most aspects of
forensic mental health occupational therapy, she is particularly
interested in work related to the use of occupational therapy
assessment tools within forensic mental health settings, and the
contribution of occupational therapy to successful community
reintegration and the impact of institutional environments on
health and well-being. While located in Melbourne Australia, she is
involved in the supervision of higher degree candidates by
distance.
