Duration of study
The periods of study for research degrees are
as follows:

Candidates wishing to study for a PhD are initially registered
as follows:
- 'postgraduate research'
- 'provisional PhD' (if he/she already possesses a master's
degree)
A formal assessment takes place after this
provisional stage before the student can be recommended for
transfer to full PhD registration. This assessment will
identify whether the student and the research project have the
potential for research at doctoral level. Full-time students
are required to complete the transfer process within 12 months of
their start date and part-time students within 24 months.
