MA/MSc by research 1 year 2 years There is no overtime for writing up with this degree
MPhil 2 years 4 years Plus a possible 1 year overtime for writing up
PhD 3 years 6 years Plus a possible 1 year overtime for writing up

We accept new research students on the 1 of October, February or June each year. We strongly recommend that applicants make their applications as early as possible (and at least three months before their preferred start date).

Candidates wishing to study for a PhD are initially registered as follows:

  • 'postgraduate research'
  • 'provisional PhD' (if he/she already possesses a master's degree)

A formal assessment takes place after this provisional stage before the student can be recommended for transfer to full PhD registration.  This assessment will identify whether the student and the research project have the potential for research at doctoral level.  Full-time students are required to complete the transfer process within 12 months of their start date and part-time students within 24 months.
