How are the classifications calculated?
The Board of Examiners for Progress and Award will determine the
degree classification for each student on the basis of two
calculations. The first calculation will take account of both the
penultimate level and the final level of the programme equally
weighted. The second calculation will take account of the final
level double weighted. The better of the results provided will
determine the class to be awarded.
A credit weighted average classification grade is calculated for
Level 2 (honours degree) or Level 1 (foundation degree) (the
Penultimate Level Average or PLA). A credit weighted average
classification grade will be calculated for Level 3 (honours
degree) or Level 2 (foundation degree (the Final Level Average or
FLA). The calculations are as follows:
1:1 Upper Level Average Calculation
The Penultimate Level Average and Final Level Average are
weighted equally.
1:2 Upper Level Average Calculation
The Final Level Average is weighted at double the
Penultimate Level Average.

|
Average 64.8 (FLA)
|

1:2 Upper Level Average PLA + FLA + FLA
= 53.1 + 64.8 +
64.8 = 60.9

The better resulting average will be considered against agreed
classification thresholds as follows: Class 1 - 68.5; Class
2.1 - 59.0; Class 2.2 - 49.5; Class 3 - 40.0.
Alice Apple would be awarded a class 2:1 honours degree.
