Help to Quit Smoking
York St John University can help you 'kick the habit'. NHS
trained Smoking advisers are available to help you quit
smoking in a way that is best for you and can give you advice and
tips on leading a smoke free lifestyle.
The role of a Smoking Adviser is to:
- offer encouragement to smokers to give up
smoking and continue to provide emotional and motivational support
throughout their one-to-one support sessions.
- advise and provide information on the forms
of Nicotine Replacement Therapy
- offer those giving up practical tips to help
the quit attempt
- offer advice on what to expect as regards
withdrawal symptoms
- measure the Carbon Monoxide levels of those
receiving support
- with agreement, put individuals in touch with
others giving up for support purposes
- facilitate group support sessions for those
who are taking part in the quit programme
It is important to note that Smoking Advisers
are not a medical advice service and should you wish to receive
general medical advice or advice on the taking of proscribed drugs
such as Zyban and Champix you must visit your GP.
Service expectations
As someone seeking the support of a Smoking
Adviser you can expect the following:
Session 1: this will be
arranged before you give up smoking to talk you through quit day
and to obtain certain information from you for monitoring
purposes. This meeting is likely to last approximately ½
hour
Session2: this will be
held on quit day and will last about ½ day
Subsequent sessions: will be
held once a week for 4 weeks. After that, they will be held
as and when needed, as agreed between yourself and the Smoking
Adviser
In return you must:
- be committed to quitting smoking completely
from day 1. Reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke on a
gradual basis cannot be supported.
- visit your GP before commencing support if
you have an existing medical condition or are taking proscribed
medication
