This degree provides opportunities for people working in education with children aged 3-16, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity, to gain a well recognised qualification.

Course structure

You will complete either twelve 20-credit modules, or ten 20-credit modules and one 40-credit module. Each module requires the equivalent of 24 hours of study at University.

All modules include contact time, tutorial time, work-based learning and independent study.

Assessment is likely to include writing essays and work-based reports, writing up case studies, giving presentations and producing teaching resources. There are no exams.

Revalidation is likely to  mean that the programme title may change and there may be additional specialist routes though the Foundation Degree. There will be alternative modules which may include:

  • Rights, risk and safeguarding
  • Additional specialist modules

Entry requirements


You will usually need:

  • A GCSE in English Language at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Two A2 Levels (or equivalent)
  • DBS clearance
  • At least six month’s experience of working with children or young people
  • Employment, paid or voluntary, for at least the equivalent of one day per week in a relevant educational environment
  • A letter of support from your employer


York St John has a flexible entry route for those who may have been out of education for a while.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend an interview.
