We know that choosing the right course and the
right university can sometimes be mind-boggling, so here is our top
ten reasons why we think York St John University should be
your number one choice:
|
We've invested over £90m in our University over the last few years to make sure it is the best it can be for you. In 2011, in response to student feedback and to ensure our learning and teaching facilities were up-to-date and appropriate to your needs, we invested heavily in our Fountains Learning Centre.
In spring 2012, we acquired a 57-acre site, just 15-minutes' walk from the campus, which will allow us to develop our sport, health and wellbeing for all agenda. We were rated in the top twenty for teaching quality in the National Student Survey 2011. We care about the quality of our teaching and we listen to our students' feedback. Much of your learning will be done in lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops but you will also experience group work, learning via Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), work placements, client-projects, practical and studio work. The mix and number of contact hours will depend on which course you are studying.
Our students consistently tell us that our staff (both academic and support staff) are approachable, friendly and supportive and our Academic tutor system ensures that you have all the support you need, when you need it.

York St John University has a stunning campus, minutes from the beautiful city centre of York and all it has to offer.
Our eleven-acre site is in a beautiful setting facing the world-famous York Minster across the city walls. Originally built around a quadrangle in 1841, York St John's oldest buildings present a striking frontage to the University. Newer buildings added over the past few years provide a wonderful contrast and include De Grey Court and the Fountains Learning Centre which houses the library, IT facilities and a modern lecture theatre. The Foss Building houses our sports hall, a physiology laboratory, a biomechanics lab, a psychology lab, a fitness suite, physiotherapy labs and general teaching rooms.
Other facilities include a dance studio, drama studio, music rooms (both practical and technical), TV and film production facilities, editing suites and dedicated art and design studios. There are a number of catering outlets on campus and the Students' Union has a bar, café, shop and offices on campus.
With around 20,000 students and around seven million tourists visiting the city all year round, York really is a lively place to be. It's great for nightlife of all kinds, it has restaurants, pubs, wine bars and cafés to suit every taste imaginable and it's fantastic for shopping, including many independent shops. York St John is literally minutes away from the city centre, so is perfectly placed for nights out and retail therapy jaunts. It's also steeped in history and there are loads of arts, cultural and visitor attractions to tempt you too!

A major investment of £95million in recent years has seen the development of exciting and cutting-edge buildings and facilities. The campus is now an impressive blend of the contemporary and historic, ranging from the Riba award-winning De Grey Court to the quadrangle.
The acquisition of nearby outdoor sports facilities in spring 2012 will allow us to develop our plans for sport, health and wellbeing for all. Consultations are underway regarding the future development of the 57-acre site and work is already taking place to prepare facilities for athletics, tennis, cricket, rugby and outdoor fitness and training for September 2012.
The Fountains Learning Centre was transformed last year. We invested £1.1million to create a new technology rich social learning environment across all three floors of the building.
De Grey Court, our £15.5million signature building is located in a prominent position, at the gateway to the city. Its proximity to the medieval walls and York Minster links the city centre with the University quarter.
It houses:
- The York St John Business School and the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
- Specialist facilities for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy
- An additional state-of-the-art lecture theatre
- 20 seminar and breakout rooms
- Specialist and general teaching environments
- A Postgraduate Centre
New student accommodation within the city walls at Percy's Lane and Gray's Wharf, to the tune of £18million opened recently. It provides fantastic, purpose-built housing for over 500 students on a self-catering basis.
Plans are now well underway for a further £12million development, which will provide an additional 258 students with state-of-the-art accommodation. The site on Carmelite Street, York, will open in September 2013.

Other recent developments have included the creation of a £2.5million Arts Centre - a renovated Victorian Gothic chapel and a modern foyer complex house the performance area with state-of-the-art lighting, sound performance and exhibition facilities, workshop designed for collaborative learning, a reception foyer area, meeting room and a new media workshop. A further £4.6million investment has provided a one-stop-shop for our Student Services and fantastic new facilities for our International Centre.
In addition, we have created specialist editing, Apple Mac and speech laboratory facilities and music technology suites.
We are constantly reviewing the needs of our students and staff and we know that by investing in our University, we are also investing in you and your future.

Our students regularly tell us that they love the York St John community and that this is an incredibly friendly place to live and learn. They love the fact that they can walk across the campus and see lots of familiar faces and that the staff in their area know them by name – none of our students are just a number to us.
Our commitment to community goes wider than the York St John campus. The University and York St John Students' Union have a great reputation for working positively to ensure a happy community through schemes such as Night Marshals, SSHH campaign and Community Coordinators scheme – we care about our local community.
