Exercise Industry Courses

If you would like a career in the exercise industry, or
wish to progress your career in this sector, these courses can help
you achieve your goals.
The courses are designed by Active IQ and delivered by York St
John University's experienced staff. The courses are REPs
(Register of Exercise Professionals) accredited and nationally
recognised. Please see the table below for course
dates.
If you do not already hold a recognised
exercise industry qualification, the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness
Instructing (Gym) provides the starting point to move into this
sector. Successful completion of this course is required to
undertake the qualifications marked with an '*'. Anyone
wishing to take a course that has a Level
2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing as an entry requirement
is required to provide YSJActive with a copy of their
certificate before the course start date.

Alumni of York St John University who
graduated in November 2012 have until September 2013 to qualify for
the YSJ price. Please contact us if you have any queries about

Instructing (Gym) - Gym Instructor
This qualification
provides the knowledge and skills to enable learners to plan,
deliver and evaluate safe and effective sessions. This
qualification will enable entry onto the Register of Exercise
Professionals at Level 2.
Entry Requirements
This
qualification is open to all, however:
- The course requires physical exertion and
individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of
physical fitness is necessary.
- There is also an element of communication
(discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners
should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

The total value of the qualification is 23
credits.
- Unit 1: Anatomy and physiology for
exercise

Level 2 Award in Instructing Circuit
Sessions
This course is designed to give
those who already have a qualification in gym or
exercise to music instruction, a professionally competent level of
skills and knowledge to plan and deliver safe and effective circuit
training sessions.

Candidates must hold a Level 2
qualification in Fitness Instructing (Gym/ETM) or equivalent.

Level 2 Award in Adapting Fitness
Instruction for Adolescents (Gym)
This qualification is designed to provide
learners with the knowledge and skills required to be able to adapt
fitness instruction to accommodate adolescents, providing an
understanding of the physiological and psychological issues they
face and how they affect their ability to exercise.

Kettlebells
This qualification is
designed to enable learners to plan and deliver safe and
effective kettlebell exercises and training sessions.

Level 3 Award in Designing Pre and Post
Natal Exercise Programmes
This
qualification is designed to enable learners to
write individualised programmes for pre and post natal
clients. Learners will also cover the benefits
of physical activity, changes that occur during pregnancy, key
considerations when working with pre/post natal clients and
nutrition guidelines.

Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Physical
Activity
This qualification gives learners the knowledge and skills to
enable them to offer nutritional advice to fitness
clients. The course covers the macro nutrients, vitamins and
minerals, micro nutrients, healthy eating, RDAs/RDIs/DRVs, food
labelling, collecting nutritional information, analysing
nutritional information, how to apply nutritional advice and
more.

Please note that by signing up for a course you are
confirming that you understand and agree to the

1) If you are not able to attend a course you
have enrolled for you will only be able to obtain a refund if your
space is filled (mitigating circumstances will be considered on a
case-by-case basis). A minimum of five working days
notice is required if you wish for us to attempt to fill your
place*.
2) You consent to photographs being taken during
the course and for them to be used for publicity purposes across
all forms of media, as deemed appropriate by YSJActive/York St John
University and the course provider.
3) You consent to your details being sent to the
sport’s national governing body or the course provider, if
applicable.
* Staff will make every attempt to fill your
place if given the notice required. However, we cannot
guarantee that this will be successful and therefore you may
not be entitled to a refund if you can no longer attend the
course.
Learners who have additional learning
needs or who may require additional support during the course
should, if they feel comfortable, make tutors and/or
the centre contact aware of these. Measures can be put in
place to support learners providing we are aware;
ideally we need this information in advance of the course
start date. Support may include additional time in
assessments, materials in alternative formats, alternative
