Dean Armstrong - YSJActive Team Coordinator

Dean is responsible for coordinating YSJActive's daily activities as well as working with local employers and young people, educating them on issues such as health, nutrition and physical fitness.

He is a graduate of York St John University, with a BA (Hons) degree in Sports Studies and has worked for YSJActive since 2008. He also works with athletes, sports teams and gifted youngsters, delivering sport-specific support, particularly in the area of strength and conditioning. Dean is a Level 3 Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist, an Active IQ Tutor and Assessor and a Level 1 Rugby League Coach.  He is currently working towards a Masters in Sport and Exercise Nutrition.  Dean’s interests include rugby league, inclusive sport, and cooking!

 

Richard Smith -Development Officer, Facility Use and Development

As a YSJActive Development Officer Richard’s main responsibility is facility use and development, but he also has a keen interest in health, wellbeing and the promotion of a generally active lifestyle.

Richard is a REPs Level 3 Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist, qualified in exercise instruction for Pre and Post Natal and programming and supervising exercise with disabled clients.  He is an Active IQ Tutor and Assessor, UK Athletics Endurance Coach and Tutor, Chair of the North Yorkshire Athletics Network and a coach of beginner and marathon training groups.  Richard is also a member of the Executive Board of Active York. Any spare time is spent running, cycling and playing golf!

 

Sarah Hawley - Development Officer, Vocational and Coach Education

Sarah’s main role within YSJActive is to organise coaching and exercise industry courses.

Sarah graduated from York St John University in 2006 with a BA (Hons) degree in Counselling Studies and holds Level 2 certificates in Fitness Instructing (Gym), Circuit Instructing, Instructing Kettlebells, Adapting Fitness Instruction for Adolescents, and Level 3 certificates in Nutrition for Physical Activity, Programming and Supervising Exercise with Disabled Clients and Designing Exercise Programmes for Pre and Post Natal Clients. Sarah is also an Active IQ Tutor/Assessor/IV and a tutor for Sports Coach UK. 

She is currently working towards her Level 3 Personal Trainer award and a Masters in Child and Youth.  She is very interested in the area of childhood obesity and hopes to work with this issue in the future.  Sarah’s interests include kettlebells, music and motorbikes.

 

Martin Bond - YSJActive Instructor

Martin's role in YSJActive is to support and develop the York St John Inclusive Activity Club (YSJIAC), Converge and other YSJActive projects.

Martin has over 14 years of experience of working with people with mental health issues.  In addition to working within mental health, he has also worked on a GP Exercise Referral Scheme and taught BTEC diplomas to professional footballers at Middlesbrough and York City Football Clubs.

Martin holds an MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology, BSc Sport and Exercise Science, Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Phase IV Exercise Instructor, GP Exercise Referral Instructor and Gym Instructor.  Martin enjoys improving the health and well-being of others, playing football, going to the gym and being a daddy!

 

Rachael Marshall - YSJActive Assistant Instructor

Rachael graduated from the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus in the summer of 2012 with a BA (Hons) in Sport and Leisure Management. Originally from Lincolnshire, Rachael moved to Scarborough permanently after graduating.

Along with her degree Rachael has qualifications in Level 2 Fitness Instructing, Level 3 Personal Training, Circuit Training, Gym Based Boxing and Group Cycling. She would like to further herself in Sports Development along with achieving more vocational certificates.

Rachael is particularly interested in football (playing and watching); she has played for several years which have involved captaining her local and university team. Rachael’s interests including playing in other sports such as squash, the arcades by the beach and doing the housework!

 

Becky Scott - YSJActive Assistant Instructor

Becky graduated from York St John University in 2012 with a BA (Hons) degree in Sport, Society and Development. She has a L2 certificate in Fitness Instructing and a L2 certificate in coaching netball alongside a number of other sport specific coaching and industry awards.

Over the summer Becky travelled to America to coach a range of sports to people between the ages of 8 and 80 who had both physical disabilities and mental health issues. In the future this is something she would like to specialise in.

Becky is a keen netball player and captained the university club in her 3rd year alongside playing for her home team the Huddersfield Giants. Aside from netball Becky’s interests include: running, the gym, shopping, watching rugby league and travelling.The core YSJActive team are supported by a team of Leisure Assistants. The Leisure Assistants are all students on sports degree programmes and are all qualified gym instructors.

YSJActive are managed by Dr Michelle Jones, Head of Sport, and work closely with Senior Lecturers John Gray and Mark Sullivan.
