First and Second World War - Roll of Honour

St John's College - War Memorial Two Memorials are located in the Chapel at Lord Mayor’s Walk Campus. The Great War Memorial was opened in 1921, and was later moved in the 1970s into the new chapel.

To the glory of God and in memory of former students of this University who gave their lives in the Great War.

A memorial oak tree in his remembrance stands in the grounds of his old school at Wolsingham, County Durham. He fought and died alongside fellow Johnsman Matthew Fullerton. John (Jack) Harrison, VC MC

Second Lieutenant 11th Bn, East Yorkshire Regiment died 3rd May 1917 age 26. No known grave, remembered Arras Memorial. Known as ‘Jack’ he was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross when losing his life at Oppy Wood when he single handed destroyed a machine gun position. Only three months earlier he had been awarded a Military Cross for bravery in the field of battle. Born 12th November 1890. A student 1910-12 he was Rugby Club captain and won cricket and swimming colours. Also a College monitor. A teacher at Lime St. School, Hull. He was a professional Rugby League player for Hull FC scoring a record 52 tries in the 1913-14 season. He was selected to tour Australia in 1914 but the tour was cancelled due to the war. Memorials in his honour can be found at the KC Stadium, Hull and in the entrance to the Sport Hall at Lord Mayor’s Walk campus York St John University. The Jack Harrison VC Memorial Trophy is competed for annually between the Army and Royal Navy Rugby League teams. Jack’s son was killed at Dunkirk in World war Two.

Sergeant Observation RAFVR 82 Squadron (Blenheim Bombers) died 13th August 1940 age 24. Buried Vadum Cemetery, Denmark. His Blenheim bomber was shot down during a daylight raid on Aalborg West airfield in Jutland. Student 1935-37. Pupil of Wath Grammar School. Employed by Mr A. Maude a solicitor in Wath. Philip Cardwell

Aircraftman 2nd class RAFVR 353 Squadron died 23rd June 1946 age 19. Buried in Delhi War Cemetery, India. The squadron consisted on Dakotas by 1945 and provided transport services across India. Student 1943-45. Born 5th August 1926. Home town Blackpool.


 

Harold Crighton Clegg

Aircraftman 1st class RAFVR died 29th November 1943. Remembered on the Singapore Memorial. Harold had been captured in Java by the Japanese and was a prisoner of war. In 1943 he was on board the passenger-cargo ship Suez Maru (a ship carrying over 400 British and Dutch sick to the mainland). The ship was torpedoed by USS Bonefish an American submarine. A Japanese mine sweeper picked up the Japanese survivors but the Captain, Kawano ordered the 200 odd survivors to be machine gunned in the sea. Only one British soldier survived. Student 1939 – left after one year. Born 23rd April 1920. Home town Worsborough Dale, Barnsley.

Joseph Curle

Sergeant Air Bomber RAFVR 218 Squadron died 11th October 1942 age 22. Buried Odense (Assistens) Cemetery, Denmark. Joseph was killed when the Short Stirling he was in was shot down into the sea off the island of Sio. Two survivors of the crash attended the burial under German guard. Student 1938-40. Cricketer. Born 25th March 1920. Home town Sunderland.

Flying Officer Observation RAFVR 264 Squadron (Mosquitos) died 15th May 1944. Buried Leadgate (St. Ives) Churchyard. He was killed during a dog-fight with a Junkers over Alton, Hampshire. Sergeant Air Bomber RAFVR 7 Squadron (Stirlings) died 25th June 1943. No known grave remembered Runnymede Memorial. Plane shot down over Dutch coast and disappeared into the North Sea during raid on Wuppertal, Ruhr. Student 1934-36. Born 15th April 1915. Home town Murton, County Durham.

Bombardier Royal Artillery died 9th September 1945 age 31. Buried Labuan War Cemetery. Died whilst Japanese prisoner of war at Kuching camp, Borneo. The camp was liberated by Australian troops three days later. Student 1932-34. College Rugby colours and organist. Born in York. Teacher Littleworth Junior school, Barnsley. Lived in Grimethorpe, Yorkshire. Left a wife Lillian.

William Derek Taylor Halstead

Warrant Officer Pilot RAFVR 90 Squadron (Lancasters) based at Tuddenham died 27th August 1944 age 26. Buried Kiel War Cemetery, Germany. During a raid on Kiel his plane crashed into the sea near Sylt an island off the German coast. All seven members of his crew were killed. Student 1938-40. Born 6th June 1918. Home town Timperley, Cheshire.


 

Henry Austin Harker

Serjeant Army Educational Corps died 17th June 1940 age 27. He was board the RMS Lancastria  (a troop ship) when it was bombed and sunk off St. Nazaire. The ship was taking part in Operation Ariel – evacuating British troops and civilians two weeks after Dunkirk. 4,000 lost their lives – the biggest British maritime disaster. He is buried in a communal grave and is remembered on the screen wall in Les Moutiers-en-Retz Communal Cemetery, France. Student 1931-33. Born 5th April 1913. Left a widow Dorothy in Gravesend, Home town Brandon Colliery, County Durham.

Able Seaman Royal Navy, HMS Hood died 24th May 1941 age 25. No known grave remembered on Portsmouth Naval Memorial. He was an anti-aircraft gunner on board the HMS Hood when it was sunk by the Bismarck. Student 1933-35. College Athletics colours. Teacher at Stile Common School, Newsome, Huddersfield. Coder Royal Navy, HMS Curacoa died 2nd October 1942 age 27. No known grave remembered Chatham Naval Memorial. Whilst escorting the RMS Queen Mary carrying 10,000 American troops the HMS Curacoa collided with the Queen Mary. Only 99 of the ships crew of 338 survived. Student 1931-33. Teacher at Hebburn Quay Boys Council School. Born 28th April 1913. Home town Hebburn, County Durham.

Was shot down over Germany during a raid on the Skoda armaments factory at Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. It was his fourth mission. Student 1939-41. Born 13th April 1921. Home town Bury, Lancashire.

Charles Cedric Ridgway 

Gunner Royal Artillery died 13th April 1945 age 19. Buried Rotherham (Moorgate) Cemetery. He was accidently drowned when he was washed off the rocks whilst walking on the beach at Bovisand Bay, Plymouth. Student 1942-44. Piano player. Born 23rd July 1925. Home town Rotherham.


 

Alexander Robe

Second Lieutenant 9th Bn Durham Light Infantry (Eighth Army) died 1st June 1942 age 27. Buried Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya. On 29th May 1942 He was awarded the Military Cross for capturing a German Commander and three Officers. On 1st June his column was hit by a ‘Stuka’ attack and he was killed instantly. Student 1932-34. Teacher at St. Hilda’s, South Shields. Born 11th July 1913. Home town South Shields.
