Certificate of Education

York St John University is delighted to announce that it will host an Honorary Degree Ceremony in June 2019 for Ripon College and York St John students who were awarded a Certificate of Education before 1980.

The Honorary Degree of Bachelor of Education (Bed Hon) will be awarded in celebration of the University’s proud 178 year heritage as an educational institution, recognising the contribution of numerous teachers we have trained who went on to inspire thousands of young minds. They will be awarded in recognition of the academic rigor demanded by the Certificate of Education and for subsequent services to education.

Six conferment ceremonies will be held across three days, at 11.00am and 3:00pm on 25, 26 and 27 June. The ceremonies will take place at the York St John campus. Each ceremony will last around sixty minutes. Honorary graduands may hire gowns if they wish, although this is not compulsory and honorary graduands will not be required to walk across the stage. Honorary Degree Certificates will be handed out at the reception following the ceremony.

Please note that the closing deadline for ceremony registrations (31 March) has now closed, however there are still a limited number of tickets available for the afternoon of Thursday 27 June. Please contact the Alumni Office directly to enquire about registering to attend.

Tickets are £20 each and include light refreshments and drinks during the reception. Each honorary graduand may bring along one guest who will require a separate ticket. Gowns can be hired through our partners Ede and Ravenscroft, further information about how this can be done will be circulated to all registered honorary graduands nearer the time. All alumni of the College of Ripon and York St John, St John’s College and Ripon College who were awarded a Certificate of Education (Cert Ed) are eligible (this does not include the Post Graduate Certificate in Education) including those who continued on to study for further qualifications at other institutions. Alumni of the College of Ripon and York St John, St John’s College, and Ripon College who were awarded a Bachelor of Education (B Ed) will not be eligible for this award.

As part of your application the University will need to verify your original award. Please send a copy of your Certificate of Education, clearly labelled with your name, address and graduation year to alumni@yorksj.ac.uk or The Alumni Office, York St John University, Lord Mayor’s Walk, York, YO31 7EX. If you cannot supply a copy of your qualification then please email us with your name, college, course and university dates. Once we have verified your award, we will send you an email to confirm your attendance at the ceremony. We would be grateful for your patience during this process. Tickets to the ceremony will be issued by the end of May 2019.

If you are unable to attend the ceremony but wish to receive your Honorary Degree certificate then please register here. As above, we will need to verify your original award. Please note that there will be a charge for posting certificates overseas.

The closing date for registrations of 31 March 2019 has now passed. Eligible graduands will be able to receive their certificates by post after this date but their names will not be included in the graduation programme.

Please note that the Alumni Office is currently receiving an extremely high frequency of enquiries regarding our Certificate of Education Honorary Degree Ceremony, and therefore may take several days to reply to individual bookings and enquiries.

We appreciate your patience and will respond to you as soon as possible. We will not be able to acknowledge receipt of any verification certificates or information immediately and again ask for your patience whilst we process them.
