Before you arrive

We understand that the build up to university is exciting but can also a scary experience. To make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible for you we have put together this list of FAQs for applying, accepting and paying deposits for your accommodation.

If you are the parent or guardian of a prospective student please see our Parents and Guardians information.

How do I apply for accommodation?

Applications for accommodation are open from Monday 4th February 2019 to Sunday 14th July 2019 – from this point, you will be able to register for an account on the Accommodation Hub. You will need to log into the hub to create your online application for accommodation. If you have any problems, you can contact us on:

T: 01904 876660
E: accommodation@yorksj.ac.uk

Please be aware that accommodation will only be guaranteed if you have applied for and accepted your offer by the July deadlines. If you miss the deadline to accept your accommodation offer, then your application will not be reconsidered until after results day, when we will be unable to guarantee that accommodation will be provided.

What if York St John University is my insurance choice?

If York St John University is your insurance choice, you will still need to apply for accommodation. Students holding insurance offers should make an application from when the application process opens in February.

Will my accommodation preferences be guaranteed?

Whilst we will try to match your specific preferences it is not always possible as certain types of accommodation may be oversubscribed e.g. en-suite. It may therefore be necessary to offer you accommodation that is lower down your list of preferences.

Do you allocate accommodation to students according to their course?

We do not allocate based on your course, as we try to make sure you will be able to meet as many people as possible during your time with us.

Please note:

Once you have submitted your accommodation application you will not need to do anything more until offers are sent out in July. If you have specified additional requirements on your application we will be back in touch for more information. If you apply for accommodation with an insurance choice an offer of accommodation will be sent to you if we become your firm choice after A level results day.

The Accommodation Agreement

The accommodation agreement is an extremely important document which we require all students to read and sign before they are given the keys to their university accommodation. We strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with the contents of the agreement before signing as this outlines all your rights and responsibilities as one of our resident students. When signing your agreement you are also complying with the information outlined in the 2018-2019 Accommodation Student Handbook (PDF 1.7MB) so it is important that you familiarise yourself with this also.

Can I come and look at my room before I move in?

This is difficult as other students are living in the halls and we have to respect their privacy. However you can see the accommodation on our open and visit days where we arrange tours around a selection of accommodation.

Can I request to live with my friends?

Sadly we are unable to take requests for living with friends. All of our accommodation is within 20 minutes of York St John University, so you will be able to see your friends. Part of the excitment of university is moving in with new people and making new friends.
