A Student's Guide to Clearing
Former student Sophie shares her Clearing tips
Finding your ideal university through Clearing doesn’t have to be stressful. Take it from me, keep calm and make the decision that feels right for you! Clearing through York St John University (YSJ) was a simple and easy process. I am here to offer some helpful tips to guide you through the process.
Research your options
Make yourself a cup of tea and look at your options. Initially, I looked on UCAS to see the universities that were offering courses in the area I wanted to study. I browsed a few of the university websites to get a feel for them and what they represented. It is a great idea to visit the campus and explore what the university and city offers.
Things to think about
Ask yourself if you intend to commute or live in university accommodation. Research the living and accommodation costs and look at the support and guidance the university can offer. If you are thinking of commuting, consider the travel accessibility and connections. Another thing to consider is the city life for a student. York is a vibrant student city filled with bars, restaurants, attractions, culture and history!
I rang the Clearing line at YSJ. Over the phone, they filled an online application out on my behalf and I was asked for my personal details, UCAS ID, grades and the course I was interested in studying. It really was that simple! They engaged with me throughout the call, making me feel relaxed and welcome. One major benefit of Clearing is that you deal directly with the university. This means that you can engage with individuals who have a unique understanding of your situation and where you are applying to go.
Making the decision
There are a couple of questions you should ask yourself. Can I picture myself living in that city, studying that course and being supported by the university in all aspects? For me, the answer was yes, I could see myself at YSJ!
After the call, I felt excited and happy and so my parents and I made the 2 hour journey to York. We walked through the city and around the campus. When I stepped onto campus my mind was made up, YSJ was where I wanted to study. I confirmed my offer with a big smile on my face!
If you are made an offer, congratulations! Now is your time to relax. Later that day, you should receive an email confirming your place. Carefully read the email and make sure you understand the next steps. The most important thing to remember is to go with what feels right for you.
Have a look at York St John University. You can book open days, have a look at courses and find out why YSJ is an awesome place! I loved it and I'm sure you will too.
Good luck in finding The One for you!
