Support for students during the coronavirus pandemic

To ensure the safety of our University community, all teaching, learning, assessment and contact time will be delivered online from 20 April. Our priorities are to protect your physical and mental health and give you the best possible opportunities to continue your studies during this unprecedented time. Although our campus buildings are closed, many of our services are operating remotely.

Library and learning support

Our library and learning support service is available online, with specialist support available from our Digital Training and Academic Liaison teams, and all other library queries being taken via email by our Service Desk team.

Finance and funding

As per information provided by the Student Loans Company, students should still receive maintenance loan payments when normally expected. Please visit the SLC's pages on this for more information.

Remote access to services and support

Many of our services can now be accessed remotely. Please see below for available support, relevant information, and contact details.

York St John Students' Union are also offering help and advice, including with housing, wellbeing, and academic FAQs.

    If you have any cocerns about your wellbeing, the Wellbeing Team is currently offering advice and support to students via email.

The Wellbeing staff are checking their inbox Monday–Friday. Although you'll iniatially receive an Out of Office response giving you some general signposting on ways to access help and support, you will also receive a personalised response in addition to the standard information being sent out automatically.

York St John students have free access to this online 24/7 support site offering self-help programmes, creative outlets and a community that cares. Students can visit the Big White Wall website and register for free using their York St John email address.

Emergency and out-of-hours support

Students in York at risk of suicide or self-harm should call the York Crisis Team on 0300 0200 317 

Students in York can access out of hours (6.00pm to 11.00pm) mental health support from The Haven at 30 Clarence Street. Please visit The Haven website or or email haven.mhm@nhs.net for information about this service.

Students not in York can find out about local mental health support services via the NHS website 'How to Access Mental Health Services' or Hub of Hope.

Welfare Advice

If students are experiencing a situation which requires Welfare Support (e.g. crime, domestic violence, sexual assault, hate crime, housing issues etc) they should email their concerns to wellbeing@yorksj.ac.uk and a Welfare Advisor will signpost them accordingly.

Support during Coronavirus crisis

Several charities have produced some useful information on how to manage your mental health in the event you are self-isolating:

    Please email any queries in relation to disability support. The DAT inbox is being checked daily and student enquiries are being directed to the appropriate Disability Adviser.

We are keen for you to know that whilst we are not on campus, we are still actively working to continue supporting you. If you have questions about any of your support needs, DSA, equipment, study support or adjustments for your studies, do please email the Disability Advice Team.

  • It is recommended that you continue working on your assignments and aim for your current deadlines, unless you have specifically been advised differently by your Academic School. If you would like study skill support, you can book sessions with a Study Development tutor, your Academic Liaison Librarian, or the Digital Trainers.
  • If you have specialist tutoring or mentoring support from STMT (Specialist Tutoring & Mentoring Team) at YSJ, then you will have been contacted to advise you that the support is term time only and they will be back working from the 20th April. This will be available remotely and you will be advised how to book by your support specialist.
  • If you need assistance with your technology, either your assistive software or your laptop, then please email assistivetech@yorksj.ac.uk or make a booking online.

  • If you need help with study skills tuition, you can book in advance and the tutorials will be available through Teams or Zoom.
  • 45-minute online tutorials are bookable online.

Library and learning support is available online, where all the information on how to access those services can be found.

  • Don't worry about fines on items you currently have on loan, we have extended the loan period so all items are not due back until the 26 September.
  • You can find online books and journals via the Library Catalogue, and our Specialist Subject Resources (A–Z Databases) are available on our website.
  • Our postal loans service is currently suspended but we will do what we can to source electronic alternatives for you.
  • The accessible scanning service can still fulfil requests. We will source PDF versions of texts from RNIB and publishers where possible, but our custom scanning service is currently suspended.
  • Laptops: If you need to borrow equipment/media equipment you can contact the Innovation and Technology Services (ITS) Helpdesk via email (support@yorksj.ac.uk). Please note that the University has limited equipment available for loan.

The Specialist Technical Team are available to support students and staff. Online tutorials and assistance can be arranged.

    The funding advice team can help students to find funding, run Money Health Checks and support you if your financial circumstances change.
  • We recognise that due to the Covid-19 pandemic you may be struggling financially but you can apply to the student support fund at any point throughout the academic year. Any help awarded from the fund is usually non-repayable.
  • To apply to the fund you will need to complete an online application. When completing the online application please make sure you use exact figures because these will be used in the assessment. During the application process, your income and expenditure will be assessed so please be prepared to provide evidence of this if requested. (Once you have started an application for financial assistance, it is mandatory that you have registered on Blackbullion, our online money education tool. You can do this using your York St John University email. Failure to register will delay your application in being processed.)

  • We are available for online video or phone careers appointments, bookable via LaunchPad Online.
  • Launchpad Online also have digital careers resources: Manage Your Future and our YouTube Podcast channels.
  • Where we were due to be in curriculum delivering, we'll be creating digital resources/lessons.
  • We recognise that you may have lost your part time job due to Covid-19 so we are looking for part-time jobs that you can do now!
  • We are working on creating online events to engage you (in particular final year) with employers who are recruiting graduate roles as well as employers who will be targeting 2nd into 3rd year students to apply for their graduate schemes from September.
  • Make sure you keep up to date through social media or Job Tease as we are sending out a weekly newsletter and we are promoting part-time jobs, graduate jobs and volunteering. We are also promoting careers appointments and online resources.

  • We are running a remote appointment service for students going abroad in 2020/21 via Microsoft Teams, Skype or Zoom. You can book through Launchpad online. You can state your preferred way to be contacted, or you can book via emailing us.

  • We can provide you with support and advice on professional placements (Education and Health courses). This can include expenses.
  • We can also support you with the next steps and options available should you want to apply for/consider a placement year.
