Course overview

Our Healthcare Management MBA brings together relevant contemporary academic theory and research with a practical understanding of activities within organisations. You will engage in a demanding process of personal and professional development which will put you in a strong position to advance your career in healthcare management. You will explore issues that have a significant impact on organisations by working with others and building on both your own personal experiences and those of your peers.

Your learning will focus on the key skills, processes and practices of business, management and healthcare management. Solutions to real problems are suggested, discussed and analysed within the learning community with the support of tutors and fellow learners. You will enhance your ability to maximise individual and organisational potential.

The major management project you undertake will involve solving a significant organisational issue. This could be a piece of work that is actionable in your current workplace or of importance to organisations generally.

Course structure

How you will study

For postgraduate study, our academic year is split into 3 semesters.

This course can only be studied full time. You can choose to study the course for 1 year without a placement, or for 2 years which includes a placement year.

If you choose to study full time without a placement, the course will take 1 year to complete. You will:

  • Take 3 compulsory modules in semester 1
  • Take 3 compulsory modules in semester 2
  • Complete your Capstone Project module in semester 3.

If you choose to study full time with a placement year, the course will take 2 years to complete. You will:

  • Take 3 compulsory modules in semester 1 of your first year
  • Take 3 compulsory modules in semester 2 of your first year
  • Complete your Business Consultancy Project across all semesters in both years of study
  • Your placement will last 1 academic year and will start after you have completed all of your taught modules.

Compulsory module

On this module you will cover a range of contemporary business issues and concerns, as well as assessing the relationship between business and society. You will explore the evolving issues and potential solutions surrounding sustainability, and consider how business can act more responsibly towards the community, society and the global environment. You will learn to apply the theoretical concepts we cover to business management activities. This will involve evaluating relevant theories and models such as the Triple Bottom Line, corporate social responsibility, business ethics and the role of the market.

Compulsory module

In every organisation, managers and leaders must lead and manage change. On this module you will explore theories of what drives innovation and change. You will evaluate how the processes of creativity and innovation in different organisations. Once you understand these, you can consider the contemporary theories in how to manage these processes and how you might apply them in practice.

Compulsory module

This module will introduce you to key international business theories and concepts. You will consider the strategic role played by transnational firms as the primary movers and shapers of the global economic system. We will investigate the principal institutional and organisational macrostructures of the global economy, the role of the state, international organisations and regional trading blocs, analysing the role they play in shaping international business. You will do this with reference to a wide range of theories, frameworks and methodologies.

Compulsory module

This module will teach you both the theory and practice of financial and management accounting. We will help you understand the important role accounting information plays in the planning, control and decision making in different organisations. Content for this module includes:

  • Accounting principles in the preparation of incomes, financial position and cash flow statements
  • The use of ratio analysis to assess financial performance and position
  • Principles of cost behaviour and costing
  • Planning, control and decision making.

Compulsory module

The success or failure of a marketing strategy heavily depends on the quality of their decision making, especially at strategic levels. This module provides a broad introduction to analysing marketing data. We will discuss the importance of visualising and understanding data, as well as representing data in a meaningful way so that it can be used for decision making. We will also explore effective methods for:

  • describing and summarising data
  • sampling and estimating
  • hypothesis testing
  • understanding the relationship between variables.

Compulsory module

Modern healthcare management demands constant innovation and improvement. The ability to adapt and thrive during rapid and turbulent change is essential for organisational survival. This module will explore factors influencing the formulation, development and implementation of hospital and associated health sector strategy. You will learn about effective design, operational management and strategies for the improvement of healthcare service delivery systems. You will examine the different approaches taken in market segmentation and their use in the planning and delivery of health services.

Compulsory module

If you have chosen to study this course without a placement year, you will take this module. Throughout the module an academic supervisor will support your independent study. The topic you select must relate to your specialist area of study. There are 2 routes you can take for this project:

On the Dissertation route you will:

  • Define a research question
  • Develop a proposal
  • Collect and analyse data
  • Prepare and resent an academic dissertation

On the Business Consultancy Project route you will:

  • Engage with the practice of management consulting
  • Negotiate a scope of work
  • Collect and analyse data
  • Prepare and present a consulting report.

Credits: 60

Compulsory module

If you have chosen to take a year in placement as part of you course, you will take this module. You will work independently to produce a consultancy project during your placement year. Throughout this module an academic supervisor will support your independent study. This project allows you to reflect on your experiences on placement and apply what you have learnt. You will:

  • Engage with the practice of management consulting
  • Negotiate a scope of work
  • Collect and analyse data
  • Prepare ad present a consulting report.

Year in industry

If you choose to study our Healthcare Management MBA with a placement year, you will be given the opportunity to choose from 2 types of placement. This gives you the opportunity to gain experience relevant to your aspirations and set give yourself a competitive edge in future career opportunities.

Work Placement

Our work placement option lets you:

  • address the demands of the business management profession
  • apply the knowledge and skills you have gained from your taught modules
  • enhance your communication and interpersonal skills
  • improve your employment potential.

Your placement will last for 1 academic year and start after you complete your taught modules. During your placement you will also complete your Business Consultancy Project.

Venture Creation Lab

This option lets you:

  • Use the university's expertise to develop your entrepreneurial skills and develop a new commercial opportunity.
  • Use the information gained on your taught modules in a practical environment
  • enhance your communication and interpersonal skills

You will start this part of the course after you have completed your taught modules and it will last for 1 year. You will base your Business Consultancy Project on the commercial opportunity developed in the lab.

During this, you will also take an internship with a partner organisation and complete the Business Consultancy Project.

Teaching and assessment

All of or modules are delivered using a range of teaching and learning techniques including:

  • Workshops.

The emphasis is always on collaborative learning, and we encourage you to share expertise and insights, allowing you all to learn from each other as well as your lecturers. 

You will receive the opportunity for study support including academic writing and research skills to enhance employability and career development in the field of business management.

Your assessments are designed to mirror real organisational activities. The types of assessment will be varied and may include:

  • Case study work.

You will receive detailed feedback on assessments to help you develop and continuously improve your performance.

    2:2 Undergraduate degree from a UK or NARIC listed institution

    6.0 IELTS score if English is not your first language

Entry onto this postgraduate course requires a minimum of a 2:2 undergraduate degree in a related subject. Your degree must be rewarded by a UK or an approved university or institution. 

If you don't have an undergraduate degree, or yours is in an unrelated subject, you can apply if you have employment experience in business management. Your experience would need to be either current or gained in the last 2 years.

International students

If you are an international student you will need to show that your qualifications match our entry requirements.
