This course is aimed at directors and senior managers in the private, public or third sectors. The Senior Leaders Apprenticeship has been designed to support your career progression, preparing you to successfully carry out senior strategic roles or to build your own business.

Course overview

You will study with a cohort of experienced professionals, building your network and giving you insights into best practice internationally. As a consequence, you will explore issues that have significant impact within organisations by working with others - building on personal experiences and comparing and contrasting them with those of your cohort members. In addition you will be able to apply the knowledge and skills you develop during the course immediately in the workplace. You will carry out projects and assignments and participate in competitions and business simulations, designed to help you apply the theories, tools and techniques you learn.

You will develop a critical understanding of the issues relating to business and management, which will enhance your ability to maximise individual and organisational potential. The Senior Leaders Apprenticeship brings together contemporary academic theory and research with a practical understanding of activities within organisations. This will be developed by enabling you to share knowledge, relate this to theories developed from relevant research, and learning by practical application.

Course structure

How you will study

You will study:

  • 4 compulsory modules over 15 months

You can finish the course at this point, complete the End Point Assessment and finish the apprenticeship. You will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma Business Administration.

You can continue your studies to gain an Executive MBA award. To do this you will study:

  • 1 compulsory modules over 6 months.

Compulsory module

On this module, you will develop a critical understanding of leadership, innovation and change in different contexts. The impact of disruptive technologies that challenge traditional business methods and practices will be explored, alongside new ways of working across infrastructure, processes, people, culture and sustainability.

Using your own experience of leadership, innovation and change, you will be encouraged to ask questions and think critically, developing your interpersonal skills and applying core leadership techniques to persuade others and drive change.

Compulsory module

On this module you will examine why ‘strategy’ is critical, explore strategic development, strategic management and how to develop sound strategy in a complex environment. The interfaces between strategy and the internal and external environments in which an organisation operates in will be explored.

You will also learn about why innovation is so important to strategic management, considering the highly complex and turbulent environments in which most private and public sector organisations currently exist and focusing on real world issues, products and systems.

Compulsory module

On this module you will develop a critical understanding of how resources are managed, deployed and allocated to achieve sustainable competitive advantages for organisations. You will focus on financial and human resources.

By studying concepts underpinning resource development and deployment, you will develop the financial accounting skills that executives need to communicate company results and make accounting choices. These concepts include:

  • Human capital development
  • Change management
  • Motivational theories
  • Learning organisations
  • Financial methods and budgeting
  • Short and long term decision making.

Compulsory module

Here you will gain a critical understanding of the concept and practice of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial behaviour in modern society, organisations, communities and individuals. You will be introduces to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, along with small business theory and practice.

You will learn how to manage the entrepreneurial task environment and risk management. You will gain an understanding of the types and characteristics of small firms, how entrepreneurs approach opportunities and the challenges inherent in starting up and running a new enterprise.

Compulsory module

Once you have completed your degree apprenticeship, you can study this module to gain an Executive MBA award. 

On this module, you will evaluate your recent professional development. Your evaluation will consider the impact of your masters studies on your postgraduate work experience and inform your planning for future development as a strategic business leader. The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge and tools to become a critically reflexive manager.


Teaching and assessment

Teaching and learning

The course delivery is based on principles of adult learning. We recognise that you are likely to bring a large amount of experience and knowledge to the group, and can share this with other participants.

Resources for learning explicitly include the knowledge, experience and skills of all participants and staff. If you have not have been engaged in formal education for some time, support with study skills, conventions of academic analysis and writing will be available for you throughout the course.

You will enhance your deep understanding of these elements, and develop yourself as an individual and as a leader. All modules are delivered utilising a range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies including lectures, seminars, a guest speaker course, tutorials, workshops and global café style learning activities.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a range of assessment tools, including:

  • Presentations
  • Critical essays
  • Portfolios and
  • Reflective journals
  • Case study work.

Your module tutor will provide formative assessment feedback prior to submission.

You will receive detailed feedback on assessment to help you develop and continuously improve your performance whilst on the course. You will have the opportunity for study support. This includes academic writing and research skills, which will enhance employability and career development in the field of business management.

Entry requirements

You must meet the minimum entry requirements which are listed on the course specifications.

In addition, you must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, achieved at Class 2:2 or above, from an approved university or institution
  • Current or recent work experience (within the last 3 years) appropriate to enable you to contribute to the course.

All applicants for an apprenticeship need to be employed by an organisation who has confirmed they will support their participation in the course.

Fees and Funding

This course is for those who are already employed in a relevant role. Your employer will sponsor your course through their apprenticeship levy.

This means you are likely to be offered a salary by your employer while you complete the apprenticeship, and will not need to pay any fees yourself.
