Course overview

How you will study

You can study this postgraduate course full time or part time. This allows you to fit your studies around other commitments.

If you choose to study full time the course will take 18 months to complete. You will study:

  • 5 compulsory modules

If you choose to study part time the course will typically take 3 years to complete and the modules will be spread across both years.

Compulsory module

On this module you will study the impact of disruptive technologies that challenge traditional business methods. Explore new ways of working across infrastructure, processes, people, culture and sustainability. We will encourage you to ask questions, developing your interpersonal skills and applying core leadership techniques to persuade others and drive change.

Compulsory module

On this module you will examine why ‘strategy’ is critical, explore strategic development, strategic management and how to develop sound strategy in a complex environment. Explore interfaces between strategy and the internal and external environments in which an organisation operates.

You will also learn about why innovation is so important to strategic management. This will help you to consider the highly complex and turbulent environments in which most private and public sector organisations currently exist.

Compulsory module

On this module you will develop a critical understanding of how resources are managed, deployed and allocated to achieve sustainable competitive advantages for organisations. You will focus on financial and human resources. By studying concepts underpinning resource development and deployment, you will develop the financial accounting skills required by executives. These concepts include:

  • Motivational theories
  • Learning organisations
  • Financial methods and budgeting
  • Short and long term decision making

Compulsory module

Here you will gain a critical understanding of the concept and practice of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial behaviour in modern society, organisations, communities and individuals. We will introduce you to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, along with small business theory and practice.

You will learn how to manage the entrepreneurial task environment and risk management. You will gain an understanding of the types and characteristics of small firms. We will show you how entrepreneurs approach opportunities and the challenges inherent in starting up and running a new enterprise.

Compulsory module

The Capstone Project is a multifaceted module that you can complete by either submitting a dissertation or a business consultancy project. The aim of this module is to encourage you to select a route where you can demonstrate the understanding and knowledge gained from the course and how this can be applied in a practical or theoretical way in a particular setting or context.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught by experts from York Business School to gain a unique blend of detailed, critical academic research and innovative industry expertise. Collaboration is key on this course. Resources for learning explicitly include the knowledge, experience and skills of all students and staff.

Support with study skills, conventions of academic analysis and writing will be available throughout the course. An academic writing tutor will also be available to support you through 1 to 1 mentoring.

  • Current or recent work experience (within the last 3 years) appropriate to enable you to contribute to the course

If your degree is in an unrelated subject, but you can provide evidence of relevant professional experience, your application may still be considered.

International students

This course is not available to international students.

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

If you do not have traditional qualifications, you might be able to provide evidence of professional experience in the subject as an alternative way to meet the entry requirements. This is called Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Appropriate references and records of employment would need to be presented to support your case for admission.

The tuition fee for 2024 entry to this postgraduate course is:

  • £10,000 for full time study
  • £11,500 for full time study with professional placement year.
