By attending this course you will learn

The study days will present an integrated and enabling approach to structuring the home environment for people with dementia through the combination of interventions to reduce the demands of tasks and environments and interventions and techniques to facilitate the meaningful independence and wellbeing of the person with dementia.

This will include collaborative and enabling educational and practical interventions with carers, as well as consideration of the roles assistive technology, physical adaptations and communication and language play in creating an enabling environment to help maintain and enhance wellbeing for people with dementia and their carers.

Upon successful completion of this day, students will be able to:

  • evaluate the evidence base and rationale for interventions designed to maintain people with dementia in the home environment and support/enable carers
  • explore an approach combining structuring of the psychosocial environment to reduce demands and maximize functioning and wellbeing
  • increase awareness and critically evaluate the work of key authors in the field
  • evaluate current practice in the field of dementia rehab and enablement
  • share and reflect upon personal practice utilising case study examples

This day is aimed at those working with people with dementia in the community setting and with people at all stages of dementia. Roles include: Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Nurses and Psychologists.

What difference will it make to my attendees?

  • Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of interventions for people with Dementia to structure three aspects of the home environment: Structuring the physical environment, the social environment and activities and occupations.
  • Attendees will be introduced to some of the evidence base for use in interventions for people with dementia and their carers in the home environment.
  • The day will focus in particular on ways of empowering carers and creating opportunities for people with dementia to engage meaningfully in their lived environment.

Course leader biographies

Stephen Wey, Senior Lecturer at York St John University, is known nationally and internationally for his knowledge and expertise in dementia care and the person centred use of technology as a way to support independent living. Stephen runs our dementia rehabilitation courses. He offers consultancy to other organisations that wish to promote best practice in using technology within dementia care services.

Stephen has a long history of involvement with the development of rehabilitative and enabling services for older people, particularly specialist services for people with dementia, and falls and telecare services.
