Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at newly qualified or mid career Band 5 or 6 Physiotherapists working in an musculoskeletal (MSK) setting or aspiring to work in an MSK specialty. It would also be suitable for established clinicians looking for a clinical update in this area.

What will I learn?

You will gain knowledge and build confidence in:

  • Knee joint assessment skills
  • Diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and clinical reasoning
  • Evidence-based management strategies
  • The role of adjunctive modalities: MSK injections and imaging
  • The impact of current practice guidelines

How will I learn?

Theoretical knowledge and practical sessions will be combined to explore how clinicians should manage patients presenting with knee symptoms. Case studies will be used throughout the day to illustrate key points and develop your skills and confidence in knee assessment, diagnosis and management.

The day will run from 9.30am to 4.00pm.

Course leader biographies

Dr Jon Thompson

Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at York St John University

Jon has been part of the academic team at York St John University since 2017. He also has 28 years of clinical experience in the NHS and private practice. Of this, 25 years were spent specialising in musculoskeletal (MSK) practice with significant experience as an Extended Scope Practitioner, and for the last 7 years as a Consultant Physiotherapist providing expert practice and clinical leadership for a large MSK service. His extended clinical skills include MSK injection therapy and the use of Ultrasound Imaging as a guidance tool for injections.

Jon’s previous NHS experience also includes service development, service tendering and working on a number of projects with the CSP developing national MSK strategy. He completed his PhD in 2018 exploring the decision-making process between MSK Extended Scope practitioners and their patients.
