Course overview

This course will provide you with a firm understanding of how finance, financial markets and investment analysis interact. You will focus on both theory and practical application, developing a solid understanding of key areas such as:

  • Corporate finance
  • Quantitative analysis
  • Investment portfolio management
  • Economics
  • Regulation and ethics

You will learn how to apply these theories and concepts in financial markets. With a clear focus on your employability, you will have the opportunity to gain additional globally recognised qualification, including:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Introduction to Investment accredited by the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI)

There will also be opportunities to engage with practising industry professionals, such as financial advisors and traders. You will take part in work-related experiences and internships to gain experience of working in the industry. Through an exciting programme of guest speakers and training consultants from the likes of the Bank of England and the Trading Academy, you will further enhance your knowledge and skills.

As with all of our Business courses, you have the option to go on a placement year between years 2 and 3 of your degree. You can also choose to study abroad for a semester at one of our partner universities.

On this module you will examine the nature of business enterprise and its relationship with wider society, focusing on what it means to be a responsible business. In the ongoing debate about what a business behaving responsibly really means, we will explore ideas including:

  • Stakeholder theory
  • The triple bottom line
  • Corporate social responsibility
  • Business ethics
  • The role of the state

On this module you will learn the basic principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics. You will develop an understanding of economic principles and techniques and learn how to apply them in business contexts. You will also investigate the different issues related to macroeconomic theories and gain insight into the impact of the macroeconomic environment on business decisions.

Understanding personal finances is a key skill for a career in the financial industry. On this module you will gain insight into the concept of direct and indirect taxes and how they apply to individuals, for example, inheritance tax and corporation tax. We will also help you understand secured and unsecured borrowing, credit cards and bank loans. You will gain a detailed understanding of personal finance products such as insurance, pensions, mortgages, savings, trust. This module is essential for obtaining The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) qualification.

On this module you will be introduced to essential quantitative methods for modelling and analysing financial data. You will investigate statistics and probability concepts, and then use these theories to analyse practical situations. This module feeds into the year 2 module Applied Econometrics.

On this module you will introduced to the essential concepts of finance and capital markets. You will learn how to describe the role of financial intermediaries within the economy and the functions they perform. You will gain the skills needed to understand and apply discounting techniques in different types of valuation models. You will create your own investment portfolio and compete in live trading using the London Stock Exchange platform. This module is essential for obtaining The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) qualification.

This module explores the fundamental concepts and techniques of macroeconomic analysis. You will gain an understanding of quantitative techniques and modern macroeconomics. You will learn how decisions of the central bank and government affect inflation, consumption, economic growth and unemployment. You will also investigate contemporary economic events. This module is essential for obtaining The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) qualification.

Year 2

In your second year you will study:

  • 3 compulsory modules in semester 1
  • 2 compulsory modules and 1 optional modules in semester 2

Compulsory module

On this module you will learn to analyse the theoretical and practical aspects of international financial markets. You will also learn about the development and current state of the international monetary system. We will investigate theories of exchange rate determination in relation to historical and current events. You will go on to use these theories and address issues around the development of international financial crises in order to further understand the impact they have on the wider economy.

On this module you will learn about the financial environment. You will look at key sources of information for decision makers and their needs. You will gain an understanding of the statements in published financial accounts and learn how to analyse and interpret the information presented.  You will also look at the information for financial decision makers inside organisations. This will include budgetary control, short term and long-term decision making.

Compulsory module

On this module you will gain the ability to discuss and apply econometric techniques using real data. You will focus on which econometric methods to use in different circumstances and how to interpret and evaluate the results. You will learn about regression techniques, using econometric software, to estimate econometric models and also methods for finding and overcoming estimation problems.

Organisations frequently require both an understanding of how and why data is acquired, and an ability to collect, analyse and interpret it. On this module you will consider the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods. You will gain skills in the collection, analysis and reporting of relevant data. You will develop your project planning and management skills as a way to manage the research process.

Enhance your future employability by experiencing the workplace. On this module you will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding in different areas related to your career. You will engage with issues such as:

  • Career decision making
  • The recruitment cycle

As part of this module you will embark on a work placement or business project in a group, or individually.

Optional module

On this module you will develop into a confident, enterprising and creative graduate who will be able to cope with the ever changing business environment. You will recognise opportunities and to take responsible and measured risks. This is a very practical module. Starting with an initial idea, you will explore and assess a business opportunity and present a feasible business concept. Working alone or in groups, you will develop skills in collecting, analysing and organising ideas and information.

On this module you will focus on the regulation of the financial services industry. You will learn to assess the impact of consumer and ethical issues in practice within the industry. You will also gain a solid understanding of the main areas of financial advice, such as budgeting, protection, borrowing, investment and savings. We will give you an overview of important aspects of the legal and regulatory system, such as ethical principles and financial advice. This module is essential for obtaining The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) qualification.

Year 3

In your third year you will study:

  • A compulsory dissertation module across semesters 1 and 2
  • 1 compulsory module and 1 optional module in semester 1
  • 2 compulsory modules in semester 2

Optional Placement Year

As with all of our Business courses, you have the option to go on a placement year between years 2 and 3 of your degree. If you choose not to do a full year, you can do a shorter placement module in Year 2. You can also choose to study abroad for a semester at one of our partner universities.

Compulsory module

On this module you will plan and conduct a piece of independent research. You will be able to choose from the following projects:

  • Traditional dissertation: Plan and conduct a piece of independent research. Present your findings in a writing.
  • Business Research Project: Complete a small scale piece of individual research work.
  • Consultancy Project: Work with industry professionals and investigate a business project and produce a research based report.
  • Business creation project: Develop a full business proposal and plan. Use primary and secondary research to support your work.

Compulsory module

On this module you will learn about different financial instruments, such as investment and hedge funds, private equity and alternative investments. You will develop the ability to analyse and combine them into an efficient investment portfolio. We will teach you to analyse financial data, measure the risk and return of investment and conduct research to provide investment advice. All areas of study on this module are underpinned by relevant regulations and ethical principles. In addition, you will master skills in areas such as dealing with a client, professionalism and ethical practice.

Optional module

Prospective managers working in an international context require a clear understanding of key aspects of the contemporary economy.  On this module you will investigate business economics topics that address relevant contemporary issues, for example, the economics of large data driven tech companies. 

While this module deals with difficult conceptual issues, we will explain these to you and illustrate what is meant with examples and news reports.

Optional module

On this module you will gain an understanding of the activities of multinational corporations (MNCs) in emerging economies. You will investigate the differences and realities MNCs face in emerging markets. We will consider how corporations can improve their chances of being successful in these economies and how multinationals in the world economy are no longer dominated by MNCs from the developed world. This includes assessing how companies based in emerging economies differ from those based in developed economies and how they have conquered leading positions in many industries.

Compulsory module

On this module you will develop your understanding of the current financial and corporate reporting environment. The primary focus will be on the United Kingdom, but references will be made to the international perspective of corporate reporting. You will learn how companies communicate with their stakeholders, including how they report on performance and strategy. You will also look at some of the issues that affect UK corporate reporting including:

  • How it is regulated
  • How helpful the current system is to stakeholders
  • Projects that are trying to improve the quality
  • Usefulness of corporate reports

Compulsory module

An important aspect of financial management is the management of risk. This module examines the various types of risk faced by individuals and businesses, in order to develop risk management techniques appropriate to different situations. We will introduce you to the economic principles underlying the insurance industry. You will explore the idea that risk and uncertainty are very different ideas and you will examine issues that reduce the insurability of risk.

All of your modules will be delivered using a variety of different teaching sessions. This includes:

Each module has 3.5 hours of contact time a week. This consists of a 1.5 hour lecture and a 2 hour seminar. 1 to 1 time can be booked through our tutorial booker system.

You will also have regular individual tutorial sessions with your academic tutors to support your learning. You will also have opportunities to gain work experience through modules which take your learning beyond the classroom and into the city.

Assessment

We use a wide variety of assessment types, which help you to develop skills relevant to the workplace. This includes:

Fees and Funding

To study for an undergraduate degree with us, you will need to pay tuition fees for your course. How much you pay depends on whether you live inside the UK, or internationally (outside the UK). Tuition fees may be subject to inflation in future years.

UK 2023 entry

The tuition fee for 2023 entry onto this course is:

  • £9,250 per year for full time study
  • £6,935 per year for the first 4 years if you study part time

Placement year funding

If you choose to take a placement year, and your course offers it, you can apply for the Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan for your placement year. How much you are awarded is based on the type of placement being undertaken and whether it is a paid or unpaid placement. The tuition fee for your placement year will be reduced.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to a portfolio day. On the day, you will show your work to our tutors and discuss your work and the ideas behind it.  You should prepare your portfolio with a range of work that may include finished projects, sketch books, digital work, paintings, photographs, drawings, 3D work, storyboards, short films or animations.
