‘…if only you weren’t such a social animal’: Feral thoughts on art and its histories.

Vanessa Corby’s research makes sense of art by analysing its making and materials. With a nod to the lived experiences that catalysed it, this lecture explores how a fascination with the matter of art inspired the question for whom art is allowed to matter. Eschewing art history’s predilection for finished artefacts interpreted through predetermined conceptual frameworks, Corby’s work performs a sustained critique of the exclusions and othering effects of art historical discourse. In this vein, she ponders the reaffirmation of art as an inherently human endeavour, revisiting exclusions of class, gender and race seeded by the historical sub-text of ‘the animal’ that policed all that had been deemed proper to art and culture.
