US Federal Financial Aid (Direct Loans)

York St John University participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program for US students which can provide funding to cover your tuition fees and living expenses, subject to approval by the US Loans team.

Federal School Code: G40323
OPE ID: 04032300

Funds are available through Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and PLUS loans. You must meet the criteria set by the US Department of Education in order to be eligible for Direct Loans.

The Federal Loan eligibility criteria are subject to change at the US Department of Education's discretion and are beyond the University's control. Your eligibility for US Federal Loans will be assessed against the Student Aid criteria, according to the information provided on your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

In addition to the Federal Student Aid criteria you must also:
- be enrolled at least at a half-time rate for the duration of your course;
- be studying an eligible, degree-bearing course;
- make satisfactory academic progress during your course; and
- with limited exceptions, undertake your study or research within the UK.

Please note that if you have taken out US student loans at York St John or deferred loans from prior studies, and thereafter you suspend your current studies, withdraw completely or drop below half-time enrolment, you must let us know immediately by email on usloans@yorksj.ac.uk. Any change in student status must be reported by the University to the US Department of Education.

Courses eligible for Federal Loans

York St John University has been approved to certify Federal Student Loans for the following degree programmes (subject to exclusions):
- Bachelor’s degree;
- Master’s degree;
- Doctorate/PhD.

There are restrictions on the University's ability to offer Federal Loan funds to students on certain courses. Students on ineligible courses may be able to apply for a Private loan instead.

Courses that are ineligible for Federal Loans include those which are less than half-time, not degree-bearing, or include online or distance learning, a period of study outside the UK, or teaching by a partner organisation. Postgraduate certificate and diploma (PGCert, PGDip) courses are classed as ineligible. The US Loans team will advise if your course is ineligible when you submit your loan application.

If you intend to join a programme that has an option for a period of study abroad or includes a work placement (internship or externship) please email usloans@yorksj.ac.uk to check that your planned programme of study is eligible for Federal Loans.

The US Loans team will start looking at loan applications from May for the academic year starting the following September, for new students who have firmly accepted a conditional offer for a place at York St John University and for current students progressing onto the next level of their course.

Students are advised to read through these US Loans web pages before starting the loan application process, in order to fully understand eligibility criteria, types of loans available, interest rates and fee charges, and responsible borrowing and repayment.

If you still have any questions please contact the US Loans team via email on usloans@yorksj.ac.uk.
