New service launch

Welcome to our new online service.

A wellbeing chat gives you a chance to talk about any mental wellbeing concerns you have.

There isn't one set definition of mental wellbeing and it will mean something different to each of you. We have created a series of chats to cover a wide range of topics. Get help with settling into university life, managing low mood and worry, dealing with the loss of a loved one and more.

What happens during a chat

Your 1 to 1 chat will be with a Wellbeing Practitioner. You can choose to have your chat by phone or online using Microsoft Teams. Your chat will last for up to 40 minutes

Chats are solution driven and your Wellbeing Practitioner will work with you to discuss your concerns and explore solutions together.

All our chats are limited to 2 sessions but we can signpost you to external services that may best meet your needs.

How to book

Wellbeing chats are available Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Browse the different chats in the drop down menu below and choose the one that is right for you.

Complete the request form for the chat you are interested in and a Wellbeing Practitioner will get back to you to with details of when your chat will take place.

We recognise that bereavement can have a significant impact on someone’s emotional and academic wellbeing. It may be particularly difficult coping with feelings of loss during this current COVID19 pandemic. We are therefore offering short term support for students who have experienced the death of someone close to them in the last 12 months.

There will be an opportunity to talk about your bereavement with a member of the Wellbeing Team.  They will help you normalise and work through feelings you may have.  We also recognise that bereavement is an ongoing process, there are no quick fixes and our service can only offer brief support. We will therefore also discuss with you other services that you could refer yourself to for more longer-term support.

If you need to find out how the university system functions, or you need to find your way around who is who, or you are unsure who to approach for assistance, then this chat is for you.

You may be a new starter at YSJ, either at undergraduate or postgraduate level. You may be someone who is facing something new and you don't know how to go about it, who to approach for assistance or what to expect. You may be facing a situation where you don't know how to handle it or where to get support.

At your Finding Your Way chat, your practitioner will work with you to find some answers. They may not have all the answers at your first chat appointment with them, but they may invite you back to discuss further when both of you have gone away to find out more information. Your first session is a chance to explore with your practitioner what you are struggling with and perhaps to come up with some suggestions on how to proceed. Where appropriate, a follow up session will be offered, within a month, to evaluate how you are getting on.

Your chat will last for up to 40 minutes. You can have up to 2 sessions.

It is very easy to rush through life without stopping to notice very much, especially at University where you are often presented with new or challenging situations. You can get caught up in thoughts and worries and find it really hard to step back and calm down. If this sounds like you, then learning and practising a few simple Mindfulness techniques could really help.

Knowing where to start with Mindfulness can be tricky though, so we have set up a Soothe Me Chat to help you get started. In this session, a Wellbeing Practitioner will guide you through a range of resources and exercises and help you identify what will work for you. After the session, your Wellbeing Practitioner hopes you will feel confident enough to go away and practice some of the techniques by yourself. They may invite you to book a follow up session, within 1 month, to review your progress (if required)

Your chat will last for up to 40 minutes. You can have up to 2 sessions.
