Worried about a student?

University life can be challenging from time to time. These pages are designed to help a friend, parent or staff member consider how best they can help a student they are worried about.

For staff members please see our e-learning pages which have additional training that you can undertake.

York St John University provide a range of support services for students to access all year round. We suggest you speak to the student concerned and encourage them to contact one of our trained professionals in the Wellbeing Team. You could also refer them to our self help pages which have information and resources that might be of use. These pages may also help you to look after yourself when supporting someone else. If you are stressed you are not in a good position to help anyone properly.

If you are worried about a student's behaviour, emotional state or personal situation you are welcome to contact a member of the Wellbeing Team for confidential advice and guidance.  The Wellbeing Team are based in the Holgate Student Centre and students can access them via the Student Information Desk, by emailing wellbeing@yorksj.ac.uk or telephoning 01904 876477.

Worried about a friend (pdf 0.1MB)

Try following the ALCER steps below:

  • Actively listen – let the student know you have heard them, take them seriously, paraphrase what they have told you.
  • Clarify – reflect back to them their central vocal and feeling message.  Ask open questions to ensure you have understood them.
  • Empowering – resist the temptation to solve their problem.  You are trying to help them take on responsibility for their own wellbeing.
  • Refer - the student to professionals who are better placed to support them.
