University life can be challenging from time to time. These pages are designed to help a friend, parent or staff member consider how best they can help a student they are worried about.

York St John University provide a range of support services for students to access all year round. We suggest you speak to the student concerned and encourage them to contact one of our trained professionals in the Wellbeing Team. You could also refer them to our self help pages which have information and resources that might be of use. These pages may also help you to look after yourself when supporting someone else. If you are stressed you are not in a good position to help anyone properly.
If you are worried about a student's behaviour, emotional state or personal situation you are welcome to contact a member of the Wellbeing Team for confidential advice and guidance. The Wellbeing Team are based in the Holgate Student Centre and students can access them via the Student Information Desk, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or telephoning 01904 876477.

The quickest way to access help is for the student to come to one of the daily Wellbeing drop in sessions.
The Wellbeing Team hold weekday drop-in sessions throughout the year. Students can access these by going to the Student Information Desk in the Holgate Student Centre at the following times:
Monday 1pm - 2pm
Tuesday 3pm - 4pm
Wednesday 1pm - 2pm
Thursday 3pm - 4pm
Friday 1pm - 2pm
The Wellbeing Team offers Counselling, Welfare advice, Mental Health advice, Coaching and provide some workshops throughout the year. They are also able to signpost to other Student Services and further support.
If you are a student please feel free to use a Wellbeing Drop-In session to ask advice about your worries or email us with your concerns.
If you are a concerned parent, family member or friend (not attending York St John) you are welcome to phone or email the team to ask advice. Please be aware that due to confidentiality policies and legislation we will be unable to provide specific information about any of our students to you, however we will be more than happy to discuss the situation with you and offer general advice.

Try following the ALCER steps below:
- Actively listen – let the student know you have heard them, take them seriously, paraphrase what they have told you.
- Clarify – reflect back to them their central vocal and feeling message. Ask open questions to ensure you have understood them.
- Empowering – resist the temptation to solve their problem. You are trying to help them take on responsibility for their own wellbeing.
- Refer - the student to professionals who are better placed to support them.
