Attending our classes

All fitness classes need to be booked through the University online store. Please use the search bar on the left of the store page to find the class if necessary.

On arrival please check in at the YSJActive Reception. Lockers and changing rooms are available. Lockers take a £1 coin, which is returned.

Circuits (strength-based training)

Class leader: Karen Vaksdal Madsen
Price: £4.00 per class, pay as you go
Ability: All

Circuit training is a high-energy, fast-paced class in which you rotate through various exercise stations, performing each exercise as many times as you can in a set amount of time. Short breaks allow you to catch your breath before continuing. Working at your own pace, with an emphasis on aerobic and strength conditioning, this class welcomes all fitness levels!

Karen is a 32-year-old Norwegian student studying Sport & Exercise Science. She’s passionate about helping other people stay happy and healthy.

Retro Aerobics

Class leader: Will Barnes
Price: £4.00 per class, pay as you go
Ability: All

Retro Aerobics is what it says on the tin. Going back to all those aerobic moves everyone knows and loves, who doesn’t love a grape vine or a leg curl. Cheesy songs from the 70s all the way up to modern pop. It’s an all levels/all abilities class where you can feel safe and comfortable on the fitness journey you want to take. No one is here to judge; we are just here to have fun.

I’m Will, a student here at YSJ. I’m 33 and for the last 25 years have worked professionally within the performing arts industry as a dancer, having had opportunities to perform across the world within companies like Disney and Sony. I’m so happy that my background in dance led me to exercise to music classes which I have been teaching now for 10 years. I love aerobics, it is for everyone and is as much about fitness as it is having fun and feeling good about yourself.

Yoga - Hatha Yoga Flow (lunchtime class)

Briony’s personal Yoga practice spans over 15 years. She has found the feelings of calm and presence that Yoga brings, has helped navigate her through many challenging periods in her life. Her passion for sharing the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of yoga with adults of all ages and abilities, shines through in her teaching.

Having trained in Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga, Briony loves to explore postures and breathing techniques to help students connect deeply with themselves, find a place of stillness, and improve their own health and wellbeing,

Briony will guide you through poses attentively, with a balance of challenge, comfort and ease.

You may wish to bring socks and a jumper for the relaxation aspect of the class, blankets are available.

Pilates is a great form of strengthening exercise, which focuses on core strength. The variety of exercises can help with posture, flexibility and balance, as well as helping you feel connected to your body and breathing. Exercises in Pilates can be modified so the class is suitable for all abilities and experience levels.
