Open access computers on campus are run Windows 10 and Office 2016. The University also has a subscription to Office 365 giving online storage This session aims to provide hints and tips for using the systems.

This course includes brief introductions to: 

  • The Windows 10 desktop including differences from Windows 7
  • Office 2016 suite
  • Outlook 365 email
  • Office 365 online apps
  • OneDrive Cloud storage
  • Connecting devices e.g. phones to timetable and YSJ email
  • Moodle

This course introduces Office 365

  • Working with online apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Using OneDrive cloud storage
  • Linking cloud storage to desktop office programs
  • Sharing files to collaborate
  • Other online apps including Sway and OneNote 
  • Limitations of Office 365

Intro1: Getting started with YSJ academic systems

Prior knowledge: None

This course compliments our Induction Toolkit by introducing some of the key features of campus IT. It will introduce the key academic systems that are used at York St John University

  • Logging onto the University computers
  • Accessing key systems such as Moodle
  • Checking an essay on TurnItIn for originality before submission
  • Submitting essays and e-portfolios
  • Printing and scanning

Apple1: Getting started with Apple Mac

Prior knowledge: None

Apple Macs are available for general use on campus. This is an introduction to using them and includes discussion of some limitations when working on campus.

This course includes:

  • Key features of the desktop
  • Finding application and files
  • Saving documents
  • Printing
  • Accessing the virtual desktop
  • Common keyboard shortcuts

PC1: Introduction to Windows 7

Prior knowledge: None

Although the open access PCs are running Windows 10 and Office 2016, we are happy to provide an introduction to using Windows 7 and Office 2010 if you require it. We would normally personalise this as required.

iPad1: Getting started with the ILS iPad mini

iPad1: Getting started with the ILS iPad mini

Prior knowledge: None

ILS iPad minis are available to borrow from the library and have many useful apps installed including iMovie, Coach's Eye, Popplet and Evernote. Full courses in the key apps are available separately.

This course includes:

  • An orientation of the iPad mini
  • Selecting and installing apps from the ILS app store
  • Restrictions and limitations of the iPad minis.
  • Getting files on and off
  • A brief introduction to any apps of interest
