Getting started in Moodle

Moodle is the main York St John University academic system. It holds details of all modules and is where assignments are submitted.  For help on submitting to Moodle see Submitting work

Problems logging in to Moodle

moodle login screenLogging in to YSJ Moodle is using your standard YSJ username e.g.

login: first.last

password

Not a YSJ account

It is possible for people to create accounts as external users e.g. before registering at YSJ. This account will not be connected to University systems although could be manually added to courses.
The student needs to log in with YSJ account. For a very few pre-registration courses, the tutor will need to manually add the student to the course

I can't see my Moodle course

I can't see my Moodle course

There are several possibilities for this

Not registered

If the student isn’t registered the courses won’t be linked. The automatic linking can take 24 hours as it runs overnight. Wait 24 hours and then contact the School Admin unit

Pre-sessional or special courses

Some courses (such as summer pre-sessional) use manual registration where the tutor enters students. The School Admin unit needs to register student

Hidden by student

Courses can be hidden by the student by clicking on the eye to the right of the course name.

They can be shown using show/hide under the course list.

Tutors hide courses

Tutors can also hide whole courses - usually to update. A typical symptom of this is “I could see the course last week and now it has gone”. Wait or contact tutor.

I've submitted the wrong document

If the submission has been completed then it can only be returned to draft by the School Admin unit. The file can then be changed to the correct file.

Once submitted check that you have received the confirmation receipt via email.

It is recommended to submit in good time to allow for unforeseen circumstances e.g. Wi-Fi/internet issues.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in your work being returned to you, or cause a delay in your submission which would be regarded as late and subject to penalties.

Have I definitely submitted my work?

When work is submitted to Moodle, the submission status is shown as submitted for grading. An email confirmation will be sent to your university email address.

If the status shows draft then

  • click on submit assignment
  • tick the box to say that the work is your own
  • confirm the submission

Check your YSJ Email for the receipt

Submitted document formats

Documents submitted directly to Moodle are seen by the tutor in their original format. Word format is recommended. Other formats may cause issues, in particular Mac Pages is inaccessible to most tutors.

Microsoft Word is downloadable free for all York St John students and staff see our page on

  • All parts of the correct assignment for the correct module are complete and final e.g. not submitting a draft.
  • The file is a Word doc unless specified otherwise.
