What is the Postal Loans Service?
This service may be used by registered current students or staff to request books currently held in York St John University Library's print stock. To be eligible for the service you must live outside the City of York.
Where possible, we will provide you with access to an electronic copy of your requested title. If this is not possible we will post out a print copy. We can only post resources to users living in the UK and Ireland.
Do I need to register for this service?
Yes, you will need to apply through our online registration form. Once this has been completed, a member of staff from our team will contact you to confirm the registration. Please note that alumni and external members of the Library are not eligible for this service.
Once I am registered, how do I apply for a Postal Loan?
Check that we have a loanable copy in stock in the Library Catalogue.
Complete the Postal Loan Request Form, giving as much detail as possible, to help us find the book. If an electronic copy of the book is available we will send you this.
When you click to submit the form, it will be emailed to us. A member of our team will keep you updated on the progress of your request.
What can I have sent out?
We can only post out loanable items of a standard size. The following items are excluded from the postal loan service:
- Reference Only items
- Oversize items
- Archives and Special Collections items
- Inter-Library Loans
In addition to the above, please be aware that some materials may be too fragile to post. If this is the case, we will inform you by email.
We will post up to 3 books at a time to addresses in the UK and Northern Ireland.
How many Postal Loans am I allowed?
Everyone who is eligible for postal loans has an allocation of 20 postal loans per year.
How much do Postal Loans cost?
We currently make no charge for sending items to you, however you will need to pay postage when returning print items to us.
Supplying the Postal Loan
If the item is available from our collections electronically we will send you a link within 48 hours. If no electronic version is available we will locate the item on our shelves, and post the item out to you. This will always be to the address you supplied us with when registering. Allowing for postage time, book(s) will usually be supplied within 5-7 days. If a book does not arrive after 2 weeks, please contact us to let us know.
What will happen if a request cannot be fulfilled?
If a request cannot be met, e.g. if it is missing from our shelves, we will inform you via email. If all of our copies are out on loan at the time of the request, a hold will be placed for you and a copy will be sent to you as soon as one is available.
Can I renew my Postal Loan?
Postal loans are the same as any other loan and will renew automatically, providing no one has placed a request for the item, you have not exceeded your renewal limit or your account is not blocked for any reason. Please contact us if you experience any difficulties renewing your items.
Returning Postal Loans
Items on your library account remain your responsibility until they arrive at the University Library. Please post items back at least one day before their due date and ask for a certificate of posting.
Items may be requested by other borrowers, so it is important to check your emails regularly to ensure you do not miss any notices we may send you. Please return relevant print items to:
