SCONUL Access scheme

The University is a member of the SCONUL Access reciprocal scheme, which enables students and staff to use other university libraries for either reference or borrowing, as appropriate. Generally, part-time undergraduate, postgraduate students and academic staff are eligible to borrow. Other students, including full-time undergraduates, are eligible for reference only access.

To register for the SCONUL Access Scheme, please visit the SCONUL Access webpages and follow the simple steps set out there.

We will respond to your application within 24 hours. Contact for any further details on your application.

Users are placed in appropriate bands according to their level of study:

Band A

Staff and Research Students 

Band B

Part Time, Distance Learning and Placement Students 

Band C

Full Time Taught Postgraduates 

Band R

Full Time Undergraduates - Reference Access only

Once your application has been approved, you will receive a confirmation email. It is important that you remember to take your library card and a copy of your confirmation email when you register.

It may be useful to contact the university library beforehand to see if they require additional documentation. They may also have additional information for SCONUL access visitors on their website.

External borrowers - visiting us for access

If you are a student or member of staff from another university, we will need you to provide the following:

  • Your SCONUL Access Confirmation Email
  • Proof of identity (e.g. Student Card, Driving Licence)

As a SCONUL user in bands A-C you will be allowed up to 10 items from our collection. For more information on borrowing please see our page Borrowing, Reserving, and Returning Library Resources.

You will be allowed an unlimited number of IT Logins. These last 24 hours and can be obtained from the Service Desk on the ground floor of the library with the production of your library card. Access is limited to using non-restricted electronic resources and the Internet. There is no access to network storage, printing facilities or the Inter-Library Loans service.

As a SCONUL user in band R you will be allowed to have reference only access to the Library. To gain borrowing rights, you can register as a fee-paying member of the public. Please see our External Borrower webpage for further information.
