Apply from outside the UK
When you apply for a Tier 4 visa from your home country, it is called applying for Entry Clearance.
How to apply
The initial steps of the visa application are done online. Once you've received your CAS you will need to visit GOV.UK and go to the visa and immigration section where you can begin the application process.
When you apply for a Tier 4 visa from your home country it is called applying for entry clearance. For entry clearance, you will need to be able to show the following:
- Academic/English language qualification documents which are mentioned on your CAS (IELTS, transcripts, diplomas, degrees, and similar)
- Bank statements/evidence that shows you have the tuition fees plus the equivalent of £9,135 maintenance funds in your bank account, for at least 28 consecutive days.
- Your passport
Once you have applied for and received your CAS, you can begin the process of applying for a Tier 4 visa.
When you apply for your Tier 4 visa, you'll need to make a payment. You can select from three service levels:
- The standard service costs £348
- The priority service costs £560
- The super priority (premium) service costs £1,304.
You will also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This costs £300 per year of study (July 2019). Paying this will generate an IHS number which gives you access to the NHS in the UK.
You'll be invited to a Credibility Interview as part of your visa application. It’s essential that you fully understand the details of your programme before the interview. You can find your course of study and view the programme specification, through our website.
You'll need to take a tuberculosis test and be able to show the test results when you apply for your visa. Check the list of the originating countries this applies to on the GOV.UK website.
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) Delivery in the UK
When your visa is granted in your home country, you will receive an Entry Clearance Vignette sticker in your passport. This is valid for 30 days and you must travel to the UK within that 30-day period. Once you are in the UK, you will need to collect your BRP card. This card is your visa for the duration of your course of study.
You can have your BRP delivered directly to York St John University by entering our Alternative Collection Location code when you apply for your visa - the code is 2HE867.
IMPORTANT: e-Gates are now operational at UK airports. Please view this video to find out about who can and cannot use the e-Gates on arrival.
