Before You Arrive

Studying in another country can take a lot of planning. Our Pre-Arrival Checklist will help you keep on top of all the tasks you need to complete and make sure you are fully prepared for your journey to YSJ University.

Download the Pre-arrival checklist (PDF, 0.1 MB) and work your way through it!

  • Accept your offer to study at York St John University (if applicable).

  • Apply for your visa or confirm arrangements for your student visitor visa (if applicable). Arrange to have your BRP card delivered directly to York St John university by entering Alternative Location code 2HE867 when you apply for your visa online. Contact visa@yorksj.ac.uk if you have any questions.

  • Check your passport. Confirm it is valid and does not expire within 6 months of your arrival.

  • Arrange medical, dental and travel insurance (if applicable). Find out what insurance you may need while you study here and make sure this is in place before you start your journey.

  • Prepare your finances. Opening a UK bank account can take some time, so ensure that your bank card will work in the UK, or that you have cash (in Pounds Sterling) to live on for a few weeks. We recommend that you carry no more than £500 in cash for your safety. A pre-paid currency card lets you top up online and pay by card in the UK with minimal bank charges.

  • Plan your journey. Check your emails for international arrivals and airport collection dates. Look at the Travelling to York webpages and plan how to get to the university. Make sure you complete the international arrivals form and if you are travelling via Manchester Airport, book a place on our free airport collection coach.

  • Keep up to date with current COVID-19 guidelines. You must provide your contact details 48 hours before travelling to the UK by completing this form on gov.uk. Check whether you need to self-isolate (quarantine) for 14 days when you arrive in the UK and read guidance for self-isolating on the gov.uk website.

  • Tell your family and friends how you will contact them once you arrive in the UK. If you are staying in YSJ accommodation, you will have free Wi-Fi in your room. Look into an international add-on for your phone plan, so that you can call and text as soon as you arrive in the UK. We also have UK SIM cards available, with free credit to get you started.

  • Complete Online Enrolment. You will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to complete your online enrolment. You need to have completed this before you leave home, so that you can access online services and support as soon as you arrive at York St John.

  • Check our Induction webpages once you have completed online enrolment, to find your Academic Welcome Week timetable and your International Orientation programme.

  • Read our Student Life webpages to find out more about life in York and at York St John University.

  • Read the First Few Days checklist on our International Student Support webpages.

  • Things will look a little different this year, so read our 2020 Welcome Guide so you know what to expect from your York St John experience.

  • Get ready for Welcome Week and order your #WeAreYSJ hoody. We have some great outdoor and online social events planned to welcome you to our YSJ community.

  • Get excited about York St John Students’ Union. Check out all the sports clubs and societies you can join when you get to YSJ and find out who your student reps are.

  • Contact iss@yorksj.ac.uk if you have any questions.
