Course overview

If you’re planning to undertake Undergraduate or Postgraduate study, the pre-sessional programme is for you. Accredited by the British Council, the programme offers you the best possible start to your studies by equipping you with the language and study skills essential for success. The course also introduces you to the University, and all our facilities.

You can choose from a 5-week or 10-week course. The course begins in the weeks prior to the start of your academic programme, depending on whether you are starting in September or January.

You will cover three main themes:

  • Academic language development
  • Academic language and study skills

The skills you will practice include:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Strategies for studying
  • Library and IT skills
  • Using the internet for research.

Entry requirements

In order to study this programme you will need:

  • To be over 18 years of age when you going the programme
  • A secondary school leaving certificate showing good grades 
  • IELTS 4.5 with a minimum of 4.0 in each skill.
