Presessional Pathway Programme

The Presessional Programme is intended for International Students who are planning to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate study at York St John University. The aim of the course is to give you the best possible start in your academic studies by equipping you with the language and study skills essential for success.

The course is accredited by the British Council, which assures the quality of our teaching and learning, staff and management, resources, facilities and environment, accommodation and support. We offer fantastic teaching facilities, including an excellent library with three floors of paper and computer resources and study areas. In addition, tutors are available for one-to-one help in meeting your personal study goals.

Main themes

The three main themes of the course are:

Academic Language Development: You will practise listening, speaking, and reading and writing skills for communication in academic contexts, and develop your language fluency, accuracy, pronunciation and vocabulary.

Academic Language and Study Skills: You will work on items such as seminar skills, listening and note-taking, writing essays, approaches to extended reading and delivering oral presentations. You will also cover strategies for studying, library and IT skills and using the Internet for research.

Orientation to York St John University and the Campus: An introduction and integration into British academic culture and student life in York.

There are two stages of the Presessional Programme:

  • 10 weeks;
  • 5 weeks.

Age Restrictions: 18+

Entry requirements

Students must be over 18 years of age when they join the programme.

If you need to achieve IELTS 6.0 to join your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate programme you will need to join:

  • 10 weeks if you have IELTS for UKVI 5.0 overall, with no skill lower than 4.5
  • 5 weeks if you have IELTS for UKVI 5.5 overall, with no skill lower than 5.0

If you need to achieve IELTS 6.5 to join your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate programme you will need to join:

  • 10 weeks if you have IELTS for UKVI 5.5 overall, with no skill lower than 5.0
  • 5 weeks if you have IELTS for UKVI 6.0 overall, with no skill lower than 5.5

 

Course dates

Please note: your enrolment and induction will take place the week before the start of the programme. Further details will be provided in your offer.

Course fees

10 week course: £2,990*
5 week course: £1,600*

This fee includes tuition hours and use of library and IT facilities (including a free email facility).

Accommodation

Homestay Accommodation

Homestay accommodation can be provided by York St John University and includes a single study bedroom, breakfast and an evening meal. You can stay with a British homestay host for £147 per week. Click the link below to download an application form:

Residential accommodation may be available in one of our University residencies. You must be at least 18 years old to stay in residential accommodation.
