The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is an initial qualification for applicants with little or no experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages.
The CELTA is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, part of the University of Cambridge, and is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English Language teachers. The CELTA is accredited by Ofqual (the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework for England. Cambridge Assessment English also works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of CELTA globally.
The full-time course consists of a minimum of 120 contact hours. It includes theoretical input, tutorial support and consultation, supervised lesson planning, 6 hours assessed teaching practice, peer observation of teaching practice and observation of experienced teachers in the classroom.
York St John University offers a full-time CELTA course run over 4 weeks (Mon – Fri). All our courses are open to external and internal applicants.
In addition there will be a Part-Time Course in 2019 running from 12 February to 2 May.
This course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17.30 to 21.00 each week and Saturdays from 10.00 to 17.00. There will be a 2 week break over Easter.

The course will:
- Teach you the principles of effective teaching
- Provide a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
- Give you hands-on teaching practice
There are five main units of learning:
- Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
- Language analysis and awareness
- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Planning and resources for different contexts
- Developing teaching skills and professionalism
The full time course involves at least 120 contact hours in addition to pre-course preparation, reading, research, assignment writing, lesson preparation and record keeping.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge Assessment English, moderates each course.
There are two components of assessment:
- Teaching practice.
- Written assignments.
You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the 6 hours. The classes will be made up of volunteer international students.
You will complete four written assignments each focusing on the following areas:
- Focus on the Learner
- Language related tasks
- Language skills related tasks
- Lessons from the classroom
As well as the teaching practice and written assignments, students will also be assessed on participation, punctuality and reliability, ability to respond and participate in feedback and self and peer observation.
To be awarded the certificate you must pass both the teaching practice and written assignment components. There are three grades — Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'.

If you are currently studying for a degree in Linguistics and TESOL, English Language and Linguistics, TESOL and French, TESOL and German, TESOL and Spanish or TESOL and Japanese at York St John University, you may be eligible to study CELTA as part of your course, at no extra cost. You must complete the course before Graduation. Please contact your Subject Director for more details.
How to Apply
If you would like to apply for a CELTA course, please download and complete the following documents and return both via email to email@example.com . We will also need a copy of an official photo ID (passport, driving licence, etc.).
What happens after we receive these documents?
- If the application and pre-interview task are satisfactory, we will invite you for an interview. An interview will typically last for 45 minutes and will include a piece of 'live' writing. You may be interviewed in pairs/groups. If you cannot attend an interview on site due to your geographical location, we will offer you a Skype or telephone interview;
- We will notify you of the outcome of your interview. If your application is successful, we will send you an official acceptance letter offering you a place on the course, which will include details on how to secure your place by paying a deposit.

- Applications are dealt with on a first-come-first-served basis. There are limited places per course and early application is advised to avoid disappointment;
- If you require a visa to study in the UK, or there are any immigration restrictions on how long you can stay in the UK, please contact us to discuss your case before you apply;
- Current SoLL students can only apply after the information meeting in November

Payment of Fees
The cost of the course is £1300, inclusive of the Cambridge fee. There are discounts and sponsorships available.
Students accepted onto the course are requested to pay a £250 deposit to secure your place, as soon as possible after you receive an offer. The remainder of the fees should be paid two weeks before the start of the course. The precise amount of money you need to pay at this stage will be detailed in your acceptance letter.
Please note that your place is not secure until you pay your deposit.
Discounts and Sponsorships
- A 10% discount in tuition fees is available to YSJ staff, current undergraduate and post graduate students and alumni;
- Students who intend to take the ELT Research Project module in the third year of their BA English Language and Linguistics, BA TESOL and Languages, and BA Linguistics and TESOL programmes are eligible to apply to have their fees paid by the School of Languages and Linguistics;
