The 2015 National Student Survey (NSS) results ranked York St John University 35th out of 123. With a score of 88% for overall student satisfaction this is above the national average of 86% for English higher education institutions.
Through a purpose-built, one-stop student support centre (Holgate Centre), students have direct access to a wide range of services including Disability Services, Student Finance, Health and Wellbeing, Study Support, Chaplaincy, Accommodation, Dyslexia & SpLD, amongst many others. Our Student Advice Team is also on hand to answer any of your queries.
Full academic support is also available via your Academic Tutor and Programme Reps (fellow students who represent you through the Students’ Union).
International Student Support
In addition to the wide range of support on offer, York St John has a specific team within Student Services dedicated to supporting international students. The International Student Support Team provide Airport Collections, support on arrival to campus, a programme of Welcome and Orientation activities, and ongoing support throughout your time with us. We employ a team of paid student workers, called Global Guides, who are from around the world and who assist in delivering Global Campus and Welcome activities. Global Guides are well trained in inclusion and intercultural communication, amongst other areas and are here to help you during your time studying at York St John.
Our Global Campus at York St John University
At York St John, we are committed to celebrating the diversity and experience of our community. Global Campus activities aim to foster inclusion, friendships, and intercultural understanding amongst all YSJ students. We offer such initiatives as Global Campus Café, Day Trips, and Intercultural Events to name a few.
Global Campus Café occurs weekly in term time, and is a friendly, safe-space for you to meet fellow students, practice your language skills, and connect with friends from around the world. You can enjoy free tea, coffee, biscuits, and great atmosphere within our Students’ Union ever Thursday (of term-time) from 4.30pm – 6.30pm.
You can take part in Day Trips to some of the best destinations the UK has to offer. Some of the previous destinations include Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Whitby, and Newcastle and tickets can be purchased at budget prices from the Students’ Union.
York St John has excellent opportunities to get involved, build your skills-set and be part of university life through the York St John Students’ Union. Whether you are interested in volunteering, playing sports, joining a society, becoming a student ambassador or getting involved with the nightlife, it’s all on your doorstep.
More than a degree
At York St John high quality teaching and learning is the foundation of everything we do. We were rated in the top 20 of institutions with the highest student satisfaction scores for teaching quality in the 2013 Sunday Times University Guide.
Much of your learning will be done in lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops but you will also experience group work, learning via Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), work placements, client-projects, practical and studio work. The mix and number of contact hours will depend on which course you are studying.
Our students consistently tell us that both our academic and support staff are approachable, friendly and supportive and our academic tutor system ensures that you have all the support you need, when you need it. The National Student Survey (NSS) 2015 results showed 90% of students stated Academic staff are enthused and 92% reported staff are good at explaining, as well as 87% of students finding staff contactable.
We know moving away to university can be daunting, so we make the transition easier by guaranteeing all our international students a place in University-managed accommodation. We have a range of great student accommodation from brand new, en-suite, self-catered accommodation just 10-15 minutes' walk away to semi-catered accommodation located on our Lord Mayor's Walk campus, just 30 seconds walk from campus.
For those who prefer not to live in University-owned or managed accommodation, our Residential Services staff are always on hand to offer friendly help and advice about finding a place to live that suits your needs.
At York St John we have invested £18million in student accommodation within the city walls at Percy's Lane and Gray's Wharf and in 2013 opened new student accommodation at St John Central. This has provided an additional 258 students with state-of-the-art accommodation just minutes from the city centre and only 10 minutes’ walk from campus.
At York St John we have invested heavily in our University over the last few years to make sure it is the best it can be for you. A major investment of over £100million in recent years has seen the development of exciting and cutting-edge buildings and facilities. The campus is now an impressive blend of the contemporary and historic, including the RIBA award-winning De Grey Court.
2014 saw the launch of the refurbished Temple Hall which provides dedicated space for lectures, events and performances.
In 2013 we opened our brand new one-stop-shop for Student Services in our Holgate Centre, along with state-of-the-art student accommodation at our new St John Central site.
We recently acquired a 57-acre site, just 15-minutes' walk from the campus, which we are in the process of transforming into state of the art sports facilities, including athletics, tennis, cricket, rugby and outdoor fitness and training, to develop our sport, health and wellbeing for all agenda.
The Fountains Learning Centre was transformed in 2011 in response to student feedback and we invested £1.1million to create a new technology-rich social learning environment across all three floors of the building, which is now a hub for student centred learning.
We are constantly reviewing the needs of our students and staff and we know that by investing in our University, we are also investing in you and your future.
With around 20,000 students and around 7 million tourists visiting the city every year round, York really is a lively place to be. It's great for nightlife of all kinds, it has restaurants, pubs, wine bars and cafés to suit every taste imaginable and has a fantastic range of shops, including many independent shops and boutiques. York is also steeped in history with a wide range of arts, cultural and visitor attractions to tempt you, including the stunning York Minster (the setting for all of our graduation ceremonies). York St John is minutes away from the city centre, so is perfectly placed to explore the city.
Our students regularly tell us that they love the York St John community and that it is an incredibly friendly place to live and learn. In fact York was ranked the 3rd safest city in the UK in the Complete University Guide's 'How safe is your city?' ranking 2013. Students love the fact that they can walk across the campus and see lots of familiar faces and that the staff in their department know them by name.
Our commitment to community goes wider than the York St John campus. The University and York St John Students' Union have a great reputation for working positively to ensure a happy community through schemes such as Night Marshals, SSHH campaign and Community Coordinators scheme – we care about our local community.
York St John University has a stunning campus, minutes from the city centre of York and all it has to offer.
Our 11 acre site is in a beautiful setting facing the world-famous York Minster across the city walls. Originally built around a quadrangle in 1841, York St John's oldest buildings present a striking frontage to the University. Newer buildings added over the past few years provide a wonderful contrast and include De Grey Court and the Fountains Learning Centre which houses the library, IT facilities, Computer Science lab and a modern lecture theatre.
The Foss Building houses our sports hall, a physiology laboratory, a biomechanics lab, a psychology lab, biomedical sciences labs, a fitness suite, physiotherapy labs and general teaching rooms. Other facilities include a dance studio, drama studio, music rooms (both practical and technical), TV and film production facilities, editing suites and dedicated art and design studios.
There are a number of catering outlets on campus and the Students' Union has a bar, café, shop and offices on campus; everything you need in one place.
At York St John you will have the opportunity to graduate in the iconic, world-renowned York Minster in amazing ceremonies often attended by our Chancellor and The Most Rev and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York. Graduation ceremonies are usually held in November each year.
Once you have graduated you are eligible to join the York St John Alumni Society. As well as receiving Alumination (our alumni newsletter), your free membership gives you access to:

Students from over 60 countries are studying at York St John University, so you can be sure you will become part of a vibrant and diverse community. York St John offers a number of opportunities to study abroad in Europe, USA and Canada and there are a range of new exchange opportunities in Australia, Japan, China, Mexico and Russia. We are recognised not only for the quantity of opportunities we have available but also for the quality of our exchange provision.
Study abroad allows you to be independent and gain confidence as well as gaining a new perspective on your academic studies. You can also improve your knowledge of another language, experience a new culture and travel once you've completed your studies.
Going on exchange will not add any time onto your degree, you simply spend one semester or one year studying your subject in another country. Your tutors will help you choose modules to ensure that they fulfil your degree requirements at York St John.
