“Twisting my memory, man”– music, memory and memoir will examine the ways that popular music is remembered both as sonic experience and as cultural activity. The event combines academic analysis and discussion with creative endeavour, performance and informal reminiscence.

Among those presenting at the event are Inspiral Carpets singer Tom Hingley, and author, journalist and academic Lucy O’Brien. Tom will be reading from his book Carpet Burns: My Life with Inspiral Carpets, which charts his time with the band from 1989–2011, as well as performing a couple of songs and a question and answer session. Currently working on her own memoir about punk and feminism, Lucy O’Brien will talk about the female music memoir as an emerging form and a new direction for music writing.

The event organisers are currently accepting proposals anyone with an interest in music, whether working in the music industry or those who simply enjoy discussing the formative music histories.

Dr Robert Edgar, Associate Professor at York Centre for Writing, York St John University, said: “We are interested in diverse modes of discussion which can include original memoir, other written responses and/or performance, alongside academic paper. Contributions can incorporate anything from a traditional paper to a creative text – or a combination – we’re open to all ideas!”

Dr Fraser Mann, Senior Lecturer in Literature at York St John University adds: “If you’re a music fan, reader of music books, or someone who likes to share memories and discuss musical histories, then this event is for you. We welcome all visitors and look forward to an exciting and friendly couple of days.”

The event takes place at York St John Students’ Union on Friday 13 July (5.00pm onwards) and Saturday 14 July (10.00am-4.00pm).
