After studying chemistry at the University of York, I worked for BP International during the 1980's and moved into academia in 1989 as programme coordinator of the highly successful and innovative Chemistry, Management and Industry programme at the University of York, where I was responsible for the leadership, design, and delivery of the programme.

In 1995, I became the Head of International Centre at Bishop Burton College with responsibility for international student recruitment and overseas consultancy work. As director of operations with the College’s consultancy company, ARREC International, I worked on highly successful multinational projects on HE development in the Baltic States. In 1997, I returned to the University of York as the Marketing Manager for the Centre for Management, ultimately becoming the Director of the Centre for Leadership and Management within The York Management School. I left the University of York in 2007 to pursue my research interest in leadership and its development.
