Staff Profile

Rachel Salvatelli

Visiting Lecturer

I joined York St John University in 2021, as a visting lecturer in Sociology and criminology. Prior to this, I was working for 3 years as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the departments of Social Policy and Social Work, and Sociology at the University of York. Although my current interests are in the social sciences, my background is in philosophy, as I hold an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and a master’s degree in Philosophy and Ethics of Human Relationships, both from the University of Perugia. I came to York in 2014, after I was awarded a White Rose College of Arts and Humanities scholarship to do a MA in Political Philosophy in the department of Politics at the University of York. In 2017, I started a PhD in Sociology at the same university.

Teaching

I teach on the following undergraduate modules:

  • Introduction to Sociological Theory
  • Fundamentals of Criminological Theory
  • Researching and Presenting
  • Introduction to the Critical Justice System.

Research

My current research centres around the narratives of fat body positive individuals and the ways in which they construct their identities in relation to their 'unruly' bodies.
