Muslim Faith Adviser
I both grew up and live in York and studied Primary Teacher training at York St John University. I went to Haxby Road Primary School down the road and still live in the same home just behind the same school. So full circle and local indeed! Whilst at York St John I founded and chaired the Islamic Society and lead the Friday prayers. We had an amazing debut year being honoured with best student society from the SU. I’m currently working for Network Rail in Safety Operations (so not quite full circle in the end!) and on the evening I love working on different community roles and projects of which Muslim Faith Adviser/Islamic Society are just a few. I studied Islam first at my local Mosque in York and then privately as I got older through books and lectures and seminars.
In 2014 I became a Faith Adviser because faith is central to my life and I wanted to offer a helping hand for others to navigate their faith journey. In 2015 I created the Islamic society with a small but tight knit team of students. We aimed to develop an inclusive hub, ensuring that students and staff don’t have an isolated experience of faith.
It was one of my proudest moments seeing students at York St John come together for the first time and have a family and home away from home. As a Faith Adviser I have spoken in confidence to staff and students who have reached out who needed an ear or advice. I've also been reached out to from the community, for example, primary schools who would like a teacher on Islam.
If you have any questions, faith or non-faith related don’t hesitate to get in touch. If there is anything that can be done to improve your experience of university and faith on campus, I would love to hear from you.
