Joanna completed her PhD ‘Breaking as Making: In what ways can making sculpture contribute to understanding perceptions and experiences of breaking?’ in May 2013, registered between Norwich University College of the Arts and University of the Arts London. Her doctoral thesis simultaneously explored and drew parallels between personal experiences in life, such as breaking bones, with those of making/breaking sculpture, Derrida's concept of the break and breaking as a methodology.
Her current research continues to explore this theme through participative sculptural installations and extends the concept of breaking as methodology in developing collaborative research projects and in exploring audience participation in experimental formats for conference papers.
Joanna was shortlisted for the first Royal British Sculptors Sculpture Shock prize and has exhibited in the UK and internationally. In 2014 & then 2015 she took over the ground floor of Unit 24 Gallery in London to produce large participative installations. She is also a member of the London Art Exchange, who created an artwork for Richard Wentworth’s ‘Black Maria’ at Kings Cross. She has contributed to international collaborative art projects with artist researchers from China, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and USA and set up similar projects for students between the UK and USA.
Joanna has 20 years’ experience of teaching in Further, Higher, Adult education and in prisons and holds a PCGE in post-compulsory education. Her specialist areas of practice are sculpture, installation, performance and participative artwork. Her research expertise is focused on breaking the body, breaking artwork, breaking as a methodology, destruction art, the fragment, ruins, audience participation in artwork and conference papers, international and interdisciplinary collaboration, artists’ writing, autoethnography and artistic research.

2013-2014 ‘This Woman’s Work’ funded by the Royal Female School of Art (RFSA) £6000 budget. I was successful in gaining funding from RFSA to explore ways to encourage debate on women’s positions as artists/makers and their representation in artwork with the aim of empowering arts students to be more aware of and choose their own position(s). 1998 ‘Creating and discovering structures’ funded by the Wellcome Trust £4000 budget. I managed the Sci-art project working with first and second year degree students in sculpture at Norwich School of Art and the Chemistry department at University of East Anglia.
