Mike's main research interest is in Computer Science Education. In particular he is interested in the affordances offered by and integration of computer games to teaching and learning. He holds a doctorate from the University of Leeds, where he investigated the use of computer games in enabling the connection between conceptual and procedural knowledge by providing problem spaces.
His teaching specialisms include networking and data communications, software engineering, web design and development and the user experience.
By background he is a network engineer and spent a number of years in industry before moving over to academia in the mid-1990s. During his academic career he has taught in institutions both abroad, in New Zealand and China, as well as here in the UK.
He is a Senior Fellow of the HEA and a York St John University E-Pedagogy Teaching Fellow.
