Postgraduate Certificate in Education Primary Full-time (with Masters level credits) Graduate Diploma in Education Primary Full-time (at level 3)
Both the primary Postgraduate Certificate in Education and the Graduate Diploma in Education programmes are popular choices for graduates wishing to join the teaching profession and study on a full-time basis. All applicants will enrol on the PGCE programme and follow the same curriculum and school-based experiences. Student teachers must pass the two Masters Level modules to gain 60 credits and gain the PGCE award. Student teachers who meet the Level 3 criteria in all modules will gain the Graduate Diploma in Education. In both cases, student teachers will be recommended for QTS providing they pass all school placements and module assessments.
The programme is structured across three modules:
- Understanding Teaching and Learning (child focus)
- The Emerging Professional (teacher focus)
- Learning and Teaching in the Curriculum
All modules run throughout the year and are linked to school placements where student teachers will be expected to make links to theory and practice. Modules assessments include a research project, essays and presentations.
Student teachers are well-supported through an academic tutor system where they meet regularly with an identified tutor to discuss targets and progress.
There will be three school-based placements: an ‘Introductory’ placement where the student teacher plans and teaches lessons from the class teacher’s plans, a more sustained ‘Developmental’ placement in the spring term where the student teacher develops planning and assessing for progression, and a final ‘Consolidation’ placement in the summer term. This final placement expects student teachers to be operating at a level similar to that expected of an NQT towards the end of the sustained block.
Experiential placements will include a private nursery placement, Settings Other Than Schools (such as museums and galleries) or an international placement. Student teachers may have the option of developing a specialism within the programme and this will be discussed at both interview and also at the start of the programme.
