Sally Maynard

I was a class teacher for 22 years prior to joining York St John University in 2006 as a teacher educator and have since gained my Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My first degree is in Language (French and Mandarin) and Linguistics and I completed my Masters (with a focus on teaching MFL at primary level) in 1997 whilst still teaching in school. MFL has always been my area of interest and I have run several pilot projects and initiatives relating to children learning languages at primary level. My background shapes the work I currently undertake in the University and I am currently involved in several projects and support groups relating to teaching MFL to young learners. I teach across both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes and my roles are currently Admissions Tutor, MFL Subject Leader, School Experience 3 Director and Head of International Development within Initial Teacher Education.

Further Information

Teaching

I have taught in several schools in every year group across both Key Stages. I was Literacy Co-ordinator, Art and Design Co-ordinator and MFL Co-ordinator throughout my school teaching career. I currently teach English to Undergraduates and Postgraduates as well as MFL across all year Undergraduate groups, including the 3rd year specialism and all Postgraduate groups.

Research

I have a particular interest in developing and encouraging all ITE students to take part in international placements and am researching the impact of these opportunities on students’ professional and personal skills and how these experiences impact on their subsequent School Experiences and lives and beyond into their NQT year. I supervise PGCE students for their research focus who have a particular interest in MFL. In addition I am working on developing an on-line language learning programme for students and teachers.
