Language identity and power

LIdIA members are interested in the ways in which language constructs individual and group identities, and is implicated in issues of power and (in)justice. We focus particularly on: gender and sexuality; multilingual and immigrant communities; the Deaf community; and the discourses of educational contexts. Methods employed include Conversation Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis. Current projects include:

  • Language, sexuality and education.
  • The subaltern university and discursive resistance.
  • Children's response to gender bias in writing tasks.
  • The Facilitative Dance: theorising interviewers' performance of self in the qualitative interview.
  • A critical thematic analysis of the hidden stories of York’s Black and Minority Ethnic community: applied linguists and community-based projects.
