Working with research students is one of the most rewarding parts of academic life, providing an opportunity to support new researchers or researcher-practitioners to generate exciting new insights, new thinking, new creative art works.
We support research projects and research students across the scope of our subject areas, including through practice-led research and written thesis, at both PhD and MA level.

Professor Lee Higgins
As part of the International Centre for Community Music, Lee would be interested in supervising in the areas of community music, inclusive music pedagogy, music education and applied ethnomusicology.
Dr Claire Hind (Associate Professor)
Claire is a practitioner-researcher interested in supervising in areas including: performance writing and writing for theatre; performance making, composition and new dramaturgy; walking based practices; multidisciplinary art practices in performance.
Dr David Lancaster
David would be interested in supervising composition-based research projects. His own compositional practice is primarily focused on notated acoustic (i.e. not electronic) music for voices and instruments, and he would particularly welcome proposals in this area.
Dr Mark Marrington
Mark has expertise in a number of research areas relating to the field of Music Production, this includes a focus on technology and musical creativity with emphasis on the digital audio workstation in contemporary music production. He is particularly interested in the history and aesthetics of recorded classical guitar music. He would be happy to supervise research in these and related areas.
Dr Murphy McCaleb
As an active musician, Murphy is interested in supervising performers who want to pursue practice as research and practice based research. His research interests include ensemble interaction, music pedagogy in higher education, experimental performance, and fusions between genres.
Dr Eirini Nedelkopoulou
Eirini is interested in performance and digital practices, interactive spectatorship, performance and philosophy (particularly phenomenology). I have a current particular focus on solitude. She would be interested in supervising projects engaged in these and connected areas.
Professor Gary Peters
Gary's research is interdisciplinary, drawing upon continental philosophy and aesthetics to interrogate a range of disciplines and practices including literature, music, dance and fine art. He is particularly interested in supervising anyone interested in the philosophy and practice of improvisation and wider issues of creativity and creative practice.
Dr Steve Rawle (Associate Professor)
Steve is interested in supervising projects broadly in the area of cinema, in particular regarding independent American cinema, cult Japanese film, and topics relating to film theory, genre, transnational and world cinema, and all manner of giant monsters.
Professor Matthew Reason
Matthew would welcome research proposals from students interested in theatre, dance and performance practice across a range of areas, including: audiences and experience; theatre for young audiences; applied theatre and community practice; creative research methodologies; practice-based research.
Dr Nick Rowe (Associate Professor)
Nick’s research interests are in arts and mental health and the debates that surround its impact and efficacy. He would welcome research proposals that develop thinking and practice in this and connected areas of applied practice.
Dr Rob Wilsmore
Rob’s research is into interdisciplinary practices (and philosophies) of collaboration. He would be interested in supervising projects centred on collaboration and co-authorship, particularly in performance, music and music production.
