Body Image in the Digital Age

Body Image in the Digital Age is a positive body image and digital literacy education initiative developed by psychologist Dr. Beth T. Bell.

Negative body image, the experience of negative thoughts and feelings about the body, is so common among young people that it is considered the norm. This is no trivial concern: negative body image is linked to a range of negative physical and mental health outcomes, including disordered eating, depressed mood and anxiety.

Many digital technologies have the potential to change how we think and feel about our bodies – from posting selfies on social media, to tracking weight loss through diet apps or following #fitspiration work-out advice. Unfortunately, many of these effects are negative, and so developing digital literacy and resilience, as well an understanding of how to relate to the body in a more positive way, becomes an increasingly important for modern adolescent development.

Body Image in the Digital Age aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate this changing digital landscape and develop more positive relationships with their bodies. We do this in three key ways:

Training.

Aimed at teachers, school mental health leads, youth workers and allied school mental health professionals, our training equips educators with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver positive body image and digital literacy sessions directly to young people. We also offer bespoke training packages for other organisations including technology developers, charities and media providers. For more information, contact our Business Development Team.

Resources.

Through our work with schools, we have developed a range of free-to-access resources - from resources eg Body Image Overview.pdf (0.8 MB) to lesson plans. Our classroom-based lesson-plans have been delivered to over 2000 adolescents across the North of England. To receive your free resources contact our project manager Caitlin Taylor.
