Suspension of Studies

Policy and procedural information

The University supports students who wish to take time away from their programme of study if this is for compelling reasons related to ill-health, parental leave, financial issues or personal reasons. This is known as a suspension of studies and is explained for students in the following documents:

How to apply to suspend your studies

If you are considering taking a break from your studies you should consult your Subject Director without delay. Following this discussion if you feel you need to suspend your studies you should then complete a Suspension of Study Application Form and send this together with your supporting evidence to your School. If you leave university without seeking approval you may not be re-admitted to the University when you wish to return.

Information for Tier 4 international students

If you are an international student on a Tier 4 visa your visa status in the UK will be affected if you suspend your studies. The University will report your suspension to the UK Home Office and you will be required to leave the UK as your Tier 4 visa will be curtailed. You will then be required to apply for a new visa before you return to your studies after your suspension. For more advice on immigration issues please contact visa@yorksj.ac.uk.
